ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball program concluded its regular season on Sunday afternoon at the University of Rochester as the Bombers wound up on the wrong end of 2-1 and 3-2 decisions. Ithaca is now 16-11-1 on the season and 11-6-1 in the Liberty League, and will head to Union College next Wednesday, May 12 for the Liberty League semifinals.
GAME ONE: Rochester 2, Ithaca 1
The Bombers got on the board in the top of the first inning on a two-out solo homerun from
Garrett Callaghan, but that was the only run IC managed to score in the game.
IC had an opportunity to add another run in the second inning with two runners in scoring position with one out, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat. In the third, IC put another runner in scoring position, and again, was unable to score.
Rochester took advantage of IC's missed opportunities and plated two runs in the bottom half of the third on an RBI triple and sacrifice fly to account for the eventual final score.
Ithaca had a chance to tie the game up in the top of the seventh as
Colin Shashaty singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout. The opener ended on the next at bat with a groundout.
Kyle Lambert took his first loss of the season in 5.0 innings pitched. Lambert allowed two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Rochester 3, Ithaca 2
IC and UR hung zeros on the board through the first five innings of play until Ithaca broke through in the sixth on an RBI single from
Louis Fabbo, which brought home
Ethan McDonough, to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead.
Rochester tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a lead-off homerun and then took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run triple with the bases loaded. The potential third run on the play was retired at the plate.
Ithaca attempted to put together a late rally in the ninth as
Jack Lynch tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Callaghan and
Buzz Shirley then drew walks and
Ethan Rothstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielder's choice to shortstop capped off the sweep for the Yellowjackets.
Nate Scott earned the start for IC and posted a solid outing in 6.0 innings pitched. Scott struck out four and allowed one run on three hits with three walks.
Garrett Bell took the loss in an inning of relief as he allowed two runs on one hit and two walks.
