Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Thomas Edson, '21

Slow Start Dooms No. 7 Women's Lacrosse in Liberty League Championship

Ithaca, N.Y. - The 7th-ranked Ithaca College Women's Lacrosse team fell behind 10-5 at halftime against No. 19 William Smith Herons and could not dig out of the hole as they lost for the first time this season, 17-13, in the Liberty League Championship Game. The less ends Ithaca's 17-game winning streak that dated back to last season and marks the third time in as many tries that the Bombers have lost in the Liberty League Championship at the hands of William Smith.

How it Happened: The teams traded goals through the nine minutes of game time for a 3-3 score. The trouble started for Ithaca when the Herons scored seven of the next eight goals, including three from game most valuable player Maddie Montgomery, to take a 10-4 lead. Ithaca was able to stop the run on a goal from senior Madison Boutureira and cut William Smith's halftime lead to 10-5 with 2:01 left in the half. The Bombers did not help themselves in the first half, committing 11 turnovers, including four failed clears.

The Bombers found their groove to start the second half, scoring three straight goals to cut the William Smith lead to 10-8 with 22:31 remaining in the game. Montgomery would not let her team relinquish the lead, however, as she scored the next two goals to give her six for the day. Every time the Bombers made a push, William Smith had the answer. A large part of that can be attributed to Montgomery and Molly Davis, who won nine and eight draws, respectively. Ithaca outscored William Smith 8-7 in the second half, but the slow start in the first half proved too much to overcome as the Herons claimed their fifth consecutive Liberty League Tournament Championship.

Game Leaders: Senior Jacqui Hallack had another strong day, posting five goals and an assist for six points. Fellow senior Megan Motkowski scored four goals for the Bombers.

Four Bombers recorded two caused turnovers on defense, and junior Kelly Mehorter picked up seven ground balls to lead the team. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Schade did all she could in goal, recording 12 saves.

Up Next: Ithaca will have to wait to hear if they earned one of three at-large bids for the NCAA Tournament as William Smith secured the Liberty League's automatic bid. The selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 3 at 10:30 A.M. EST.
