TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team faced a tough test to open a doubleheader at RPI on Saturday at Robison Field, as the Bombers were no-hit in a 4-0 loss in Game One, but rebounded to salvage the split with a 6-3 win in the night cap. Ithaca is now 15-9-1 on the season and 10-3-1 in the Liberty League
GAME ONE: RPI 4, Ithaca 0
RPI took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a lead-off error came around to score on a double to left. The Engineers added to their lead, 2-0, in the bottom of the third on another RBI double.
RPI tacked two more runs on the board in the sixth to take a 4-0 edge into the final inning of the opener. Engineers' pitcher Ryan Yerby took it from there and closed out the game with a no-hitter, as Yerby struck out five batters and walked four in 89 pitches thrown.
GAME TWO: Ithaca 6, RPI 3
The Liberty League foes breezed through the first five innings of action with just one combined hit allowed – a single by
Louis Fabbo in the top of the first. IC kept RPI out of the hit column until the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the sixth, the Bombers took a 2-0 edge as
Garrett Callaghan doubled in
Mike Nauta for the initial run and then
Buzz Shirley followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home
Jack Lynch.
The Bombers added two more in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Fabbo, which plated Nauta and
Ethan McDonough.
RPI pulled to within a run in the bottom half of the seventh as two runs scored on a double to the right-center cap and the third scored on a sac fly.
IC responded with two more in to eighth on an RBI infield single from
Ethan Rothstein, scoring Callaghan, and then Shirley crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.
RPI was retired in order of the final two trips to the plate by
Garrett Bell, who picked up his second save of the season.
Dom Trippi earned his first career victory in 4.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts and three earned runs.
Matt Chase started the contest and went 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
IC and RPI will concluded the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Freeman Field
