Softball and Rochester Split for Second Straight Day

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team and the University of Rochester met for a Liberty League doubleheader in as many days and the outcome was a same – a split – at Kostrinsky Field. IC took game one, 9-5, while Rochester answered with a 1-0 win in game two. Ithaca is now 12-4 on the season and 8-2 in the Liberty League.

GAME ONE: Ithaca 9, Rochester 5

Rochester jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run homerun. The Bombers answered with a homer of their own in the bottom of the third, a three-run shot from Julia Loffredo, to put IC ahead, 3-2. Allison Dell'Orto and Haley White scored after reaching on a base hit and walk.

Rochester tied the contest at 3-3 on a two-out single and then regained the lead, 4-3, in the sixth on an RBI single.

IC's bat erupted in the bottom half of the sixth, as the Bombers hung six runs on the board to turn a one-run deficit into a five-run lead at 9-5. Kira Flegenheimer started the rally with a hit by pitch and then Tava Kasper walked. Hudson Hassler followed with an infield single to load the bases and Dell'Orto drew a walk in the next plate appearance to tie the game up at 4-4.

White continued the inning with an RBI single, driving in Kasper to put IC back ahead. Haley Gaffney then stepped to the plate and blasted a grand slam to right to end the six-run output.

Rochester got another run back in the top of the seventh on a lead-off homerun, but that was the final run of the contest.

Riley Piromalli earned the win in 3.0 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Beth Fleming started in the circle and went 4.0 innings in a no-decision.

GAME TWO: Rochester 1, Ithaca 0

A classic pitcher's duel graced Kostrinsky Field in the nightcap as Fleming and Rochester's Emily Sharlach went toe-to-toe in a pair of seven-inning complete games.

IC threatened to put the first run on the board in its initial at bat by placing two runners in scoring position, but a groundout ended the inning.

Rochester scored the only run of the contest in the top of the third as a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with an out. A bloop to right-center fell in to score a run, but IC was able to get an out at second base on the play.

It was a breeze for both hurlers for the remainder of the contest, as IC only produced two hits and Rochester had one.

Fleming allowed four hits and three walks with three strikeouts, while Sharlach fanned five and allowed just two hits – a double from Gaffney and single by White.

The Bombers head to RIT for a doubleheader in Rochester on April 21 beginning at 2 p.m.
