Softball Earns a Pair of Close Liberty League Home Wins over Clarkson

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College softball team recorded a doubleheader sweep against Clarkson University on Friday afternoon, as the club defeated the Golden Knights 4-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two. The sweep improves the Bombers' record to 14-4 on the season, as their Liberty League record improves to 10-2. The South Hill Squad will return to action on Saturday April 24 at 1 p.m., as the club will once again take on the Clarkson University Golden Knights, in Potsdam, NY.

GAME ONE: ITHACA 4, CLARKSON 2

The Golden Knights struck first in game one, as they put a run on the board in the top of the third inning. Clarkson opened the scoring with a single to left field, prompting the Bombers to face an early 1-0 deficit.

The Bombers quickly answered this run in the bottom half of the frame, as junior Julia Loffredo left the yard with a two-run home run to left field, driving home sophomore Allison Dell'Orto. The blast was the right fielder's sixth home run of the season and provided Ithaca with a 2-1 lead after three innings of play.

Ithaca and Clarkson then traded zeros until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Bombers tacked on a pair of insurance runs. The club extended their lead to 4-1 over the Golden Knights, as junior Daniella Mulvey's drove home sophomore Kailey Collins and senior Haley White with a two-run double down the right field line.

Clarkson didn't go down quietly in the final inning of play, as they trimmed the Bombers' lead to 4-2 with a single to right-center field.

This would hold as the final score, as Fleming would secure Ithaca's 4-2 win over Clarkson with her ninth strikeout of the game. The right-hander held Clarkson to just one run in a 128-pitch, complete-game effort. Fleming earned her sixth win of the season in the contest, improving her record to 6-3 on the campaign.

GAME TWO: ITHACA 6, CLARKSON 5

The Bombers got on the scoreboard first in game two, as they plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take an early 2-0 lead over Clarkson. Dell'Orto opened the scoring with a single to right field, to bring home Laccona. Later in the inning, Loffredo crossed the plate on a passed ball to score the college's second run of the frame.

The club tacked on two more runs in the following inning, as Dell'Orto lined a two-run single to center field. The knock brought home Laccona and Mulvey, extending Ithaca's lead to 4-0 over Clarkson after four innings of play.

The Bombers added a pair of insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, further extending their lead to 6-0 over the Golden Knights. First-year Belle de Olivera plated the first run of the inning, as she came home to score on a passed ball. Loffredo then lined a single center field to drive home Laccona.

The Golden Knights broke their offensive silence in the top of the seventh, as they erupted for five runs in the final inning of play. The first run of the frame came on an infield single with the bases loaded. This was followed by a two-run double to right-center field and a two-run single to left field, trimming the Bombers lead to 6-5.

Sophomore Riley Piromalli managed to escape this trouble, striking out the final two batters of the game to secure the Ithaca Bombers' 6-5 victory against the Clarkson Golden Knights. The right-hander delivered an impressive outing in the contest, as she struck out seven batters and held Clarkson scoreless until the seventh inning. The performance provided Piromalli with her eighth win of the season, improving her record to 8-1 on the year.
