Softball Splits at Clarkson on Saturday

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Ithaca College softball team split a doubleheader with Clarkson University on Saturday, with game one ending in a 3-0 loss and game two a 7-0 win. The Bombers now hold a record of 11–3 in the Liberty League and 15–5 overall. Ithaca will take on the Rochester Institute of Technology on Wednesday, April 28, in Rochester, N.Y.

Riley Piromalli highlighted the day for IC, as she took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game two and retired two runners before allowing a hit.

GAME 1: ITHACA 0, CLARKSON 3

The first contest of the day left the Bombers scoreless while Clarkson picked up a trio of runs late in the game. Strong defense on both sides kept the innings moving swiftly with quick outs and easy plays across the board.

Ithaca pitcher Beth Fleming helped her team out with five strikeouts to hold off the Golden Knights for the majority of the contest. Clarkson's Olivia Zoeller had an impressive showing, striking out a total of 12 batters for her eleventh win of the season, while Fleming recorded her fourth loss.

Clarkson would crack the Bombers defense in the sixth, scoring three runners to take the first and only lead of the game. A handful of singles and a sacrifice fly allowed the Golden Knights to capitalize and solidify the victory with the final score standing at 3–0 in favor of Clarkson.

GAME 2: ITHACA 7, CLARKSON 0

With a loss under their belt, the Bombers headed into the latter half of the doubleheader determined to break even after being shutout. Ithaca turned the tables on the Golden Knights and handed them their own scoreless contest to conclude the afternoon.

Gabby Laccona started the outing off with a bunt to the third base side to put herself on base, later tagging up on a sacrifice fly for the Bombers' first run. Offense came to a halt for the next two at bats and would pick up once again in the fourth for Ithaca.

Haley Gaffney and Haley White hit back-to-back homeruns in the fourth inning to add to the lead. Two more Bombers crossed the plate in the fifth, a hard-hit double off the bat of Gaffney helping to move runners around the diamond. A walk and an error in the same at-back worked in favor of Ithaca and would end the inning with a 5–0 lead.

Kailey Collins doubled to left field in the sixth to put herself in scoring position and Piromalli took advantage of the situation. Piromalli singled and advanced on an error from the right fielder, sending Collins home.

Hudson Hassler kept the momentum going with a single, and a throwing error moved her to second base. A double from Laccona sent Hassler across the plate for an RBI, leaving Clarkson with a seven run-deficit heading into the next at-bat.

A scoreless seventh inning on both sides finalized the 7–0 victory for the Bombers, capping off their second doubleheader versus Clarkson in as many days.

Piromalli allowed three hits in 7.0 innings of work with a strikeout, improving her record to 9-1 on the season.
