Softball Wins Two at Union to Sweep Weekend Series

Schenectady, N.Y. - The Ithaca College Softball team took both games in a doubleheader at Union College, 4-0 and 9-0. With the wins, Ithaca swept the weekend series with the Dutchwomen, 4-0, and improved to 8-2 on the year and 6-0 in Liberty League play.

Game 1: The Bombers got the scoring started in the second inning as senior Gabby Laccona singled to center field and drove in sophomore Kailey Collins and junior Daniella Mulvey. The scoring slowed down for Ithaca until the fifth and sixth innings. Collins drove in Mulvey in the fifth and Allison Dell'Orto got Laccona home on a groundout in the sixth.

Senior Beth Fleming kept Union at bay the whole game by not allowing a hit until the fourth inning.

The Bombers were busy at bat, recording 11 hits on the day. Laccona led the way with a 3-4 performance and drove in two runs. Sophomore Tava Kasper went 2-2 at the plate.

Fleming pitched a complete game and only allowed two hits and recorded four strikeouts while facing 27 batters.

Game 2: Ithaca jumped out to a lead right off the bat in the second game as junior Julia Loffredo hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Dell'Orto. Ithaca took command of the game with a four-run second inning to go up 5-0. A scoreless third inning kept the score 5-0, but the Bombers recorded another four-run inning to extend their lead to 9-0 in the fourth.

Piromalli action 2021While the offense was spectacular, sophomore Riley Piromalli kept the momentum that Fleming built in game one by only allowing one hit while facing 18 batters. In total, Fleming and Piromalli allowed just three hits facing 45 batters.

The bats stayed hot for Ithaca in the second game of the day, as the Bombers recorded nine runs on eight hits in just five innings. First-year Belle de Oliveira led the team going 2-3 at the plate while Dell'Orto brought in four runs.

Up Next: Ithaca will travel to rival SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, April 14, for a doubleheader with the Red Dragons. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
