Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Run Away with Dominant Victory over No. 12 Scranton

ITHACA, N.Y. – Four of the five starters finished in double figures for the Ithaca College women's basketball program as they dominated the action on Wednesday leading from start to finish in a 75-53 win over No. 12 ranked University of Scranton. The Bombers were stout defensively holding the visitors to just 32.6 percent shooting from the floor and used the fourth quarter to pull away as Ithaca improves to 2-0 overall with the victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Grace Cannon led all scorers pouring in 16 points on an efficient 8-of-12 from the field as she also packed the stats sheet with six rebounds and four assists.
  • Also scoring in double figures for the Bombers was Camryn Coffey (14), Cara Volpe (10) and Lindsey Albertelli (10) who nearly tallied a double-double collecting nine rebounds, which included three offensive boards.
  • The Bombers shot 53.3 percent from downtown and capitalized on the Royals turnovers scoring 25 points off the Scranton errors, including eight points that were netted on the fast break.
  • IC contained the reigning Landmark Athlete of the Week all evening long as Bridget Monaghan scored just 15 points in 37 minutes of action and was forced into three turnovers.
  • It was a hot-shooting fourth quarter from IC that put the game out of reach as they went 9-of-13 from the floor and knocked down both of their triples that they attempted down the stretch.
How it Happened
  • The Bombers won the opening tip and Cara Volpe dribbled right into the paint for an uncontested layup and a turnover at 8:46 led to a Megan Yawman transition 3-pointer. Yawman added to the lead with a jumper from the key three minutes later and IC led 7-1. Scranton called a timeout with 3:55 left in the first quarter, but a Melissa Buxton trey out of the break put the Bombers up 15-3.
  • Leading 18-7 going into the second 10-minute period, it was an evenly contested second quarter with both teams scoring 14 points apiece. The action went back and forth as Camryn Coffey nailed a 3-pointer that was assisted by Natalie Smith with 2:38 remaining and the Royals scored the final basket of the half on an Emily Shurina runner in the paint. IC went into the halftime break with an 11-point advantage (32-21).
  • Ithaca continued to pressure defensively and it led to easy buckets on the other side of the floor as they built a 16-point lead early into the third quarter after back-to-back layups from Lindsey Albertelli. Off a missed layup from Bridget Monaghan, Grace Cannon smartly ran the floor in transition and scooped the ball off the backboard putting her team up 50-33 with 2:33 left in the third quarter. The Royals went on a 8-2 run to close the quarter.
  • Outstanding closeout defense across the final 10-minutes of play was the name of the game for Ithaca. The were Royals were unable to mount any comeback attempts with a Cara Volpe layup, Grace Cannon layup and Camryn Coffey trey down the stretch putting the game out of reach. The Bombers cruised to the 75-53 win at the final buzzer.

Ithaca College will look to continue rolling when they return to action on Friday in a road matchup against SUNY Cortland. The Red Dragons own a 1-2 overall record as they fell to Hartwick on Tuesday (55-49) and tip-off against the Bombers from the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium is slated for 7 p.m.
