MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team had its 2021 season come to an end in the first round of NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday. The Bombers were downed by Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-0, at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.
Stevens opened the match on the front foot, they nearly were able to get on the board at the 2:52 mark as Taylor Whitlock attempted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but the shot hit the top of the goal frame and on the ensuing rebound
Allison Heft cleared the ball out of the dangerous area.
The Ducks kept up the offensive pressure and were rewarded with a goal off of a corner kick attempt. Taylor Whitlock on the third set piece opportunity of the afternoon used the wicked wind and was able to curve the ball into the back of the net. The goal was scored in the 13
th minute for the Ducks.
Ithaca College nearly scored the equalizer in the 20
th minute when the squad strung together several passes and
Megan Buttinger sliced her shot attempt high and over the goal frame. Stevens was able to add an insurance goal in the 29
th minute, from the left side of the pitch Taylor Whitlock swung a cross that Gab Aloe settled and buried the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
The Ducks as displayed by the first half score line were the more dangerous of the two schools in the attacking third of the field with Stevens holding a 11-3 edge in shots.
Stevens once again found the back of the net in the second half with Fiona Matthews squaring a pass into the right side of the box and on a first-time shot, Elsa Bley sent her attempt into the back of the net that gave the Ducks the 3-0 lead with 18:07 remaining. The Bombers nearly added a scoring effort in the 84
th minute when
Alex Epifani crossed a ball into the box, but the shot attempt from
Rosie Bostian was just right of the frame of the goal.
The Ducks outshot IC by a 21-6 margin and defensively sophomore goalkeeper
Claire Reader tallied six saves.
Ithaca finished the 2021 season with a 14-4 overall record.
