Volleyball Concludes Liberty League Play on a High Note with Win over Vassar College

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Bombers racked up 52 kills and for the second day in a row the Ithaca College volleyball team won a three set match this time besting Vassar College on the road on Saturday. Ithaca took the first set 25-20, built a 2-0 advantage by winning the second set 25-18 and earned the sweep with a 25-23 triumph. With the win, Ithaca College improved to 14-10 overall and finished 6-1 within the Liberty League to secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championships that will begin on Friday, November 5.

It was another day of having a balanced scoring attack for the Bombers with Jaelyn Hershberger leading the squad with nine kills followed by Jamie Koopman and Camryn O'Leary who each notched eight kills apiece. Koopman was equally as impressive defensively with a match-best eight blocks and fellow middle Paris Buckner tallied six blocks in the win. Leading the backline was Jordyn Lyn Hayashi who tallied 10 digs as it was the 17th time this season that the senior libero has recorded 10 or more digs.

The opening set saw a back-and-forth battle from the beginning as a Paris Buckner kill at the net gave her team an early 8-7 lead. The Bombers scored three-straight points in the middle of the set thanks to back-to-back kills from Buckner and Jaelyn Hershberger that saw them go up 18-12. Vassar College (6-10, 2-5 Liberty League) battled back taking a 22-17 deficit and turning it into a 22-20 score as they capitalized on a few IC errors. Ithaca regrouped and scored the final three points for the 25-20 set win.

The Bombers pounced on an opponent setting error and used a Camryn O'Leary kill to build a 15-12 margin in their favor. The Brewers railed again in the second set to come within three points (21-18), but once again Ithaca took advantage of a few hitting errors and Laura Severance recorded an ace within the run to secure the 2-0 set advantage.

Vassar College started the third set red-hot and were up 11-6 before IC rattled off five-straight to tie it up at 11 points apiece. The schools traded points and the lead before a Morgan Miller kill tied it up at 23 points. Ithaca relied on its experience playing in close sets this season and two attacking errors by Vassar gave the Bombers the 25-23 victory and the sweep.

The Bombers will travel and take on SUNY Cortland in its next contest on Wednesday, October 27. Ithaca bested the Red Dragons in five sets in their season-opener as it was an epic back and forth matchup. Game time on Wednesday is slated for 7 p.m.
