Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Alderete Joins 1,000-Point Club as IC Drops Union, 99-77

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Sebastian Alderete became the 28th player in Ithaca College men's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points on Friday evening inside Ben Light Gymnasium as the Bombers handled Union College, 99-77, in a Liberty League matchup. Ithaca improves to 11-3 overall on the season and 7-1 in the Liberty League, while Union falls to 9-5 and 6-3.

Alderete entered Friday night's game just three points shy of 1,000 for his career, and it took him only 36 seconds to reach the milestone, as Alderete drilled a 3-pointer for Ithaca's first basket of the contest. Alderete would go on to finish the game with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, to go along with six rebounds and two assists.

Fellow senior Riley Thompson notched his second career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson was 5-for-10 overall, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range, and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line.

Sophomores Zach Warech and Skylar Sinon each poured in 18 points in the win. Warech's 18 points are a career-high, as he went 7-for-10 overall and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and ripped down seven rebounds. Sinon was 5-for-5 at the line and 5-for-9 from the field, and dished out three assists with three boards.

Ithaca shot the lights out from 3-point range in the first half as the Bombers went 11-for-18 from distance (61.1-percent) and were a perfect 7-for-7 on free throws, as well as 16-for-35 overall, which led to a 50-36 advantage at intermission.

After 3-pointers from Alderete and Thompson gave Ithaca a 6-3 edge in the opening minute, Union took the lead at 10-8 at the 16:45 mark.

The Dutchmen maintained control for the next eight-plus minutes until the Bombers regained the lead at 24-23 on three made free throws by Sinon with 8:32 left in the half. Union was unable to score a point for more than five minutes (12:07 to 6:54), which allowed Ithaca to build a six-point lead at 29-23, before the Dutchmen could end their scoreless drought.

Once Union got back on the board at 29-25, the Bombers went on a 21-11 run to close out the half, which was capped off with a buzzer-beating layup by Warech off an assist from Sinon.

Union managed to pull to within nine points early on in the second half, 55-46, with 16:56 left in the game, but over the next seven minutes, the Bombers put the game away with a 28-7 run to mount a 30-point edge at 83-53.

During that run, Thompson scored 14 points, while Alderete netted seven points, which included a fast break slam dunk at the 12:03 mark.

Ithaca's largest lead of the night, 31 points, came on a 3-pointer from Warech with just over seven minutes remaining at 88-57.

Union trimmed its deficit down to 21 points by the final minute of the contest before sophomore Clay Medling went 1-for-2 at the line to close out the scoring for both teams.

The Bombers finished the game 34-for-69 overall (49.3%), 17-for-35 from 3-point range (48.6%) and 14-of-15 at the line. IC also outrebounded Union, 44-31.
