Men’s Basketball Completes Perfect Road Weekend With 101-87 Win at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball battled all afternoon with Clarkson University in a road Liberty League contest inside Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday and came away with a 101-87 victory. Sophomore Skylar Sinon guided the Bombers to an overall record of 10-3 and a 6-1 mark in the Liberty League with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting, to go along with 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Saturday's matchup witnessed 11 lead changes and 10 ties.

During the first half, the Bombers led early on, 4-3, after a 3-pointer from senior Sebastian Alderete just over a minute in. Ithaca would maintain its edge for the next three-and-a-half minutes until Clarkson went up, 11-10, with 15:39 remaining.

From there, the league foes would find themselves in six different ties over the next eight-plus minutes up to a 31-31 deadlock. The Golden Knights would then score 11 straight points to take a 42-31 advantage with 5:21 to go.

Ithaca answered with its own 11-0 run over the next 1:30 to tie the contest back up at 42-42 with just over three minutes remaining. During that run, junior Cooper Macklin, senior Riley Thompson and Sinon all hit 3-pointers to erase the double-digit deficit.

After Clarkson regained the lead at 44-42, Sinon converted a four-point play to vault the Bombers back on top, 46-44, with 2:46 left. Both teams would then go scoreless for over two minutes until sophomore Zach Warech made both ends at the foul line to send the Bombers into halftime with a 48-44 advantage and cap off a 17-3 run.

Sinon, Alderete and senior Jake Mitchell all scored nine points in the first half. Sinon also had six rebounds and three assists, while Alderete handed out five assists with four rebounds.

The early goings of the second half were eerily similar to the first half as IC and Clarkson played to within a single possession for six-plus minutes.

With the score tied at 65-65 with 13:52 remaining in the game, Ithaca rattled off seven consecutive points in just 40 seconds to build the largest lead of the contest at that time at 72-65.

Clarkson answered with a quick run of its own to make the difference 73-71 at the midway mark, but Thompson converted another four-point play for IC to push the disparity back out to six points.

The Bombers then went up by 12 at 85-73 as freshman Liam Spellman went 2-for-2 at the line with 6:22 remaining.

Sinon then established a 15-point cushion with 2:36 left as he made all three attempts at the line. Ithaca held on to its double-digit lead for the rest of the game and Thompson put the Bombers over the century mark with two made free throws to cap off the contest.

Thompson finished the game with 19 points as he went 9-for-10 at the line and 4-for-11 from the floor. Mitchell contributed 14 points and five rebounds, while Alderete added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Warech tallied 10 points on a perfect shooting afternoon and junior Bryan Karl had six points in the win.

Ithaca went 34-for-69 (49.3-percent) from the field, 11-for-26 (42.3%) from 3-point range and 22-for-27 (81.5%) at the line.

The Bombers return home next weekend for Liberty League showdowns with Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
