GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team was back on the courts at William Smith College when the Bombers capped the final day of the Mary Hosking Invitational on Sunday. The Bombers posted some strong performances on the day, which included a consolation doubles flight triumph for a pair of IC first-year players.
Ithaca entered the day with one singles player still in contention in the winner's bracket, as senior
Brianna Ruback earned a pair of victories in the 'A' Singles Flight yesterday. Unfortunately, she was unable to sustain the momentum on Sunday when she faced Rochester's Rola Abouzeina in the semifinal round this morning. Ruback battled hard in the contest, which remained close for the majority, but Abouzeina was able to lock things in late, besting the IC senior in an 8-5 decision.
In singles action, one other Bomber was able to secure a win in the consolation ladder. First-year
Caroline Herz began the day with an impressive 8-3 win over Cate Gluchowski of SUNY Geneseo. She went on to face St. Lawrence's Maddie Nasch of St. Lawrence in the C-Flight back draw finals, but came up shy in an 8-0 defeat.
The highlight of the day came in the consolation back draw in the 'B' Doubles Flight, as the rookie tandem of
Rachel Kostival and
Sarah Sposito turned in a pair of impressive wins to take the title and put an exclamation point on their first collegiate tournaments. Kostival and Sposito began the day by facing Emily Le and Nicole Papert of Hamilton. IC's duo dominated with an 8-2 runaway win to punch their ticket to the finals. Standing in their way was RIT's Julianne Ho and Mia Hoffbauer of RIT. The Bombers youthful tandem continued to play well off each other, pulling away early en route to a convincing 8-3 decision.
Ithaca is set to return to action on Saturday, September 14, when the Bombers head to Hoboken, New Jersey, for the Stevens Singles Invitational.
