Women's Soccer Battles Wilkes to 0-0 Draw

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team battled Wilkes University to 0-0 draw on Wednesday afternoon. The Bombers are now 1-1-1 on the season.

Both teams were able to string together offense early on, as both goalies were tested in the opening minutes.

Senior goalkeeper Sara Jakobsze stopped a header from Wilkes' Emily Bidelspach just 50 seconds into play. The Bombers then took things the other way and put a shot on frame. Sophomore Megan O'Reilly's shot was saved by goalkeeper Samantha Cecere.

Ithaca continued to produce chances on the offensive end in the ensuing minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

Shots from Alex Epifani and O'Reilly both sailed high in the fifth and seventh minutes. The Bombers then recorded corner kicks in the 15th and 17th minutes.

Epifani put another shot on goal for the Bombers at the 21:00 mark, but Cecere came up with the save again. The junior had another chance in the 26th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.

Jakobsze was tested again in the 35th minute, making the save on a Delfina Bracchi attempt to send things the other way.

The Bombers recorded back-to-back shots in the 36th and 37th minutes, but the shot from Gabriella Mihale was wide while Epifani's ball was too high.

In the second half, the Bombers were unable to put together much offensive pressure and did not get off any shots. The Colonels did not have much success either, as they recorded four shots, none of which were on goal.

After 90 minutes of scoreless regulation, the Bombers and Wilkes headed into overtime.

In the first overtime, senior Ally Christman sent a shot to goal in the 94th minute, but Cecere made the play and kept the Bombers off the board. That would be the lone shot of the period for either team.

The Bombers opened up the second overtime period with another shot on goal, but Christina DiCesare's attempt was saved by Cecere.

Ithaca put more offensive pressure on in the second period. Epifani's shot in the 107th minute, however, was blocked by a Wilkes defender.

The Bombers recorded a corner kick with 1:36 remaining on the clock, but nothing came of it, ending the game in a draw.

IC is back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. match at Mount St. Mary in Newburgh, N.Y. The Bombers play their home opener on Wednesday, September 11 against Cortland at 4 p.m.
