Rochester Takes Down Ithaca Baseball, 15-2

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College baseball team fell to the University of Rochester Yellowjackets, 15-2, at Freeman Field on Wednesday, April 3. With the loss, Ithaca is now 12-5 on the season, while Rochester improves to 11-9.

During the game, Rochester had 19 hits. Aiden FInch was a key player in the win as he went 5-for-5 with three RBI and a double. Zach Miraz went 3-for-5 for Rochester with two RBI.

Ithaca had seven hits on the day but were plagued by seven errors throughout the contest. Senior Matt Carey and freshman Matt Wimmer both went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

The Yellowjackets began their offense display in the top of the first inning when an error by senior Webb Little allowed Rochester's Steve Pickering on base. In the next at bat, Finch hit a single up the middle to advance Pickering to third. Jacob Matzat then hit a single to right field to score Pickering to make the score 1-0.

Miraz hit a double to start the second inning and advanced to third off a wild throw on a pickoff attempt by senior Jake Binder. Brian McKinsey then singled through the left side of the infield to score Miraz for the first run of the inning. McKinsey crossed home plate after Finch hit a double to make the score 3-0.

Harper Sy scored the fourth run of the game for the Yellowjackets off a single up the middle by Miraz in the third. Later in the inning, Miraz scored from third off a throwing error by junior Buzz Shirley. Rochester made the score 6-0 after a wild pitch by Binder but were unable to score any more runs in the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Rochester added another run when Sy grounded out, which plated Finch. The Yellowjackets finished the inning with the score 8-0 after Miraz doubled down the left field line to score David Rieth.

The Bombers scored their first run of the game after Carey singled through the left side to plate sophomore Garrett Callaghan, which cut the Yellowjackets' lead to 8-1 at the end of the fourth inning.

Rochester responded by scoring seven runs over the next five innings to make the score 15-2. The Bombers put one run on the board in the bottom of sixth when freshman Matt Wimmer singled to left center to score freshman Jason Sarubbi, but that was the last run the Bombers would score on the day.

Binder took the loss in 3.0 innings of work as he allowed seven runs (one earned) on eight hits. Sophomore Bill Willett tossed the next 2.1 innings before senior Christian LaLomia entered for 2.2 innings of work. Junior Charlie Hammel threw the final inning in the game.
