The Thoroughbreds grabbed early control of today's contest with a trio of convincing results in the doubles session to race out to a big 3-0 lead. The closest battle for IC came in the first-doubles matchup, as the senior duo of
Kathryn Shaffer and
Caroline Dunn snatched a couple of games from Risa Fukushige and Renee Karchere-Sun in an 8-2 defeat. The other two matchups were 8-1 final margins with junior
Brianna Ruback and first-year
Alexandra Dyszewski falling in the second-doubles slot and sophomore
Sara Steinberg and rookie
Shannon Wolfe suffering the same defeat in the third-doubles pairing.
The Bombers did not find much more luck in the singles session, as the Thoroughbreds continued to put the pressure on. While the top of the lineup were able to snag a few games, Skidmore's depth throughout the lineup led the way. Skidmore took all six of the matchups in straight sets.
Ruback and Fukushige engaged in a fairly competitive opening set, but the Skidmore netter was able to snag a couple crucial service breaks en route to a 6-3 win. With fatigue setting in during the final stretch of this busy weekend, Ruback struggled to keep pace in the second set, falling 6-0.
The seniors Dunn and Shaffer also were able to score a couple games in their respective matches at second-singles and third-singles. Dunn got off to a challenging start, but showed some battle in winning both of her games in the second set of a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Koiava. Like Ruback, Shaffer dropped a 6-3 opening set to Karchere-Sun, but ran out of steam in the second set, falling 6-1.
The bottom half of the singles lineup featured consecutive 6-1, 6-0 defeats. Dyszewski fell to Skidmore's Feldman in the fourth slot, while Steinberg lost to SooHoo by the same score line in the fifth-singles matchup. First-year
Rel Klein got the nod in the sixth position, but suffered the same fate in a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Sofia Carlsson.
Ithaca returns to the courts on Saturday, April 20, when it faces RPI in its penultimate home match of the season. Start time is set for 10:00 a.m.
