ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday morning at Freeman Field as the Bombers fell to St. John Fisher College, 2-0. Ithaca is now 19-6 on the season and 12-2 in the Empire 8, while Fisher improves to 18-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
It was a slow start offensively for both teams as only four total hits were produced over the opening three innings of play – three for Ithaca and one for Fisher.
The stellar pitching duel between senior
Jake Binder and Fisher's RJ Kuruts continued over the middle innings as both hurlers hung zeroes in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
Fisher managed to get on the board in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out base hit through the right side of the infield. Thomas Pasquale led off the frame with a single and then scored from second base on the RBI base hit from Ryan Simmons to make the score 1-0.
Ithaca responded in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases with one out on a single by junior
Buzz Shirley, followed by a fielder's choice from senior
Matt Carey and consecutive hit by pitches to senior
Cam Fuoti and sophomore
Jack Lynch. The Bombers were unable to push a run across, however, as the next two batters struck out.
Fisher rode that momentum into the top of the eighth as Ryan Brown led things off with a solo home run to tack on the insurance for the Cardinals.
The Bombers would go down in order in the eighth and ninth innings against Tim Geissel as a 1-6-3 double play ended the contest.
Binder took the loss in eight innings of work. Binder gave up two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and recorded 16 ground outs.
Senior
Matt Eiel allowed one hit and struck out one in the ninth inning.
Senior
Webb Little went 3-for-4 at the plate for IC, while Shirley was 2-for-4.
The Bombers will travel to Brockport on April 17 for a 4 p.m. non-conference contest.
