Women's Basketball to Host Liberty League Championship This Weekend

ITHACA, N.Y.
– The Ithaca College women's basketball team is set to host the 2019 Liberty League Championship tournament on Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24 in Ben Light Gymnasium.
 
The top-seeded Bombers will welcome No. 2 RIT, No. 3 Vassar and No. 4 William Smith to South Hill for the weekend, with action starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
 
No. 1 Ithaca vs. No. 4 William Smith – Saturday, February 23 | 12 p.m.
 
The Bombers will host nearby William Smith in the first game of the tournament on Saturday. While Ithaca had a bye in the first round of the playoffs, William Smith defeated Union, 65-50, to advance.
 
Ithaca's most recent game was a 64-55 win over Vassar on Saturday, February 16, which locked up the No. 1 seed in the tournament and earned the Bombers the regular-season Liberty League title for the first time since joining the conference in 2017. Ithaca currently sits at No. 3 in the most recent WBCA rankings.
 
The Bombers rounded out conference play with a 15-3 record and picked up their 20th win against Vassar, improving to 20-5 on the season.
 
Junior Cassidy O'Malley leads the team with 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She currently ranks sixth in the Liberty League in scoring and her 2.2 blocked shots per game is good for second overall. Senior Annie Giannone and sophomore Grace Cannon are also averaging close to double-figures, as Giannone is at 9.7 points per game and Cannon is a 9.4. Giannone is currently averaging 3.9 assists per game, which puts her at second in the Liberty League.
 
William Smith is led by senior forward Mia Morrison, who is averaging nearly a double-double this season with 18.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Morrison ranks second in both categories in the Liberty League.
 
The Herons rounded out the conference slate with a 12-6 mark and currently sit at 17-8 overall.
 
Ithaca and William Smith split the regular-season series. The Herons won the first matchup in a 76-69 overtime battle before Ithaca came away with a 64-58 victory the second time around.
 
No. 2 RIT vs. No. 3 Vassar – Saturday, February 23 | 2:30 p.m.
 
In the second semifinal of the day, the second-seeded RIT will face No. 3 Vassar.
 
RIT is currently 19-6 overall and finished the Liberty League slate at 14-4. The Tigers are riding an 11-game winning streak, having last lost to SUNY Geneseo, 65-52, on January 15.
 
Four RIT players are averaging double-figures this season, led by Sabrina Wolfe's 15.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Tara Lynch is at 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while Brooke Stanley is average in 12.3 points per game and Cori Okada is at 12.1 per game. Okada also leads the team and the conference with 4.9 assists per game.
 
The Tigers also received a bye in the first round of the tournament and last defeated Bard on Saturday, February 16, 81-49.
 
Vassar enters the weekend at 21-5 overall after rounding out the conference slate at 14-4. The Brewers defeated Skidmore, 71-53, on Tuesday evening to advance to the semifinal game.
 
Junior Sophie Nick is averaging nearly a double-double this season with 15.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Jackie Cenan and Isa Peczuh are also in double-figures with 14.4 and 13.0 points per game, respectively.
 
RIT and Vassar split the series this season, as Vassar prevailed the first time around with a 74-66 win, before RIT came out on top in the second matchup, 72-58.
 
The winner of Ithaca/William Smith and RIT/Vassar will advance to Sunday's final at 12 p.m.
