ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 8 Ithaca College men's soccer team stayed perfect in Liberty League play with a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. It was the first time the Bombers defeated the Saints since a 1-0 win in 2004.
Â
Ithaca got on the board 25:26 in, when sophomore
Colin Shust headed in his second goal of the season, off a corner kick from senior
Tom Dillmann.
Â
Prior to scoring their first goal, the Bombers had several promising chances that were not converted.
Â
Just 13:29 into play, St. Lawrence goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger was out of the net. Sophomore
Alex Leahy's shot, however, just missed the mark, hitting off the post.
Â
Luke Karen sent a shot in to Woelfinger in the 16
th minute, which was saved. Leahy then had another shot on-goal in the 20
th minute, which was stopped. The Bombers went on to earn two more corner kicks prior to the corner which Shust scored off of.
Â
St. Lawrence had a quality chance to even things up in the 28
th minute, but Marvin Sibanda's attempted was saved on the line by Shust to keep the Saints off the board.
Â
St. Lawrence came out of the halftime break to create several offensive pushes. The Saints put their first shot on goal just 57 seconds in, which resulted in goalkeeper
Max Lichtenstein's second save of the game.
Â
The Bombers continued to work on adding another goal in the second half. Junior
Jonathan Kyriakidis put a shot on-frame 2:26 in, which was saved by Woelfinger. The goalkeeper also came up with a stop on a
Thomas Pierce ball in the 50
th minute.
Â
St. Lawrence broke through on the offensive end with the game-tying goal with 17:57 remaining. Raphael Zoccolaro tapped up a pass to Michael McDougald who fired a shot past Lichtenstein to even things up, 1-1.
Â
Just over five minutes later, the Bombers pulled ahead once again. Dillmann sent in a corner kick, which first-year
Aidan Keenan got a head on. Keenan's shot hit off the crossbar, but Kyriakidis was able to get the rebound and send the ball into the back of the net, giving IC a 2-1 advantage with 12:06 left on the clock.
Â
The Saints had two more on-frame chances through the remainder of the game, but neither were successful. Lichtenstein stopped a header and a shot from Sibanda in the 84
th and 87
th minutes to push IC to the win.
Â
Lichtenstein picked up the win to improve to 10-1-1 on the year, as he made five saves in net for the Bombers.
Â
Ithaca is back in action next Saturday at Clarkson for a 2 p.m. contest. The Bombers play five of their last six games on the road, but close out the regular-season at home against RPI on Saturday, November 2.
