Field Hockey Suffers OT Heartbreaker in 1-0 Defeat at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team was back on the road on Wednesday evening when the Bombers traveled to Oneonta, New York, for a non-league clash at SUNY Oneonta. Unfortunately, it was another overtime heartbreaker for the Bombers, as the Red Dragons scored the lone goal of the contest right at the horn of the first overtime period to steal away a 1-0 victory. The loss for Ithaca drops the team's record to 9-6 on the year; however, the team certainly still controls its own postseason destiny, still sitting at 4-1 in Liberty League play heading into a pivotal weekend.

Today's result is certainly the Bombers would likely want to have back. The Bombers completely dominated the contest over vast stretched, but the offense was stuck in neutral when it came to finishing. Coming off a five-goal assault this past Sunday in a huge home victory over St. Lawrence, IC's streaky attack was held goalless for the third time this season.

Overtime again proved to be unkind for IC, as for the second time over the past three matches the Bombers had the game slip away in the waning seconds of extra session. Tonight's contest literally came right at the death, as Grace Billow sent a shot home through a screen in front that deflected off IC keeper Savanna Lenker's pad and just over the goal line to seal matters for the hosts.

The lone scoring tally came off a penalty corner chance, which has been a problem that has plagued the Bombers over recent fixtures. Although IC led the game in almost every statistical category, Ithaca conceded eight penalty corners, six of which came during an overtime period that was dominated by the hosts down the stretch. It marked the fourth straight game in which IC conceded more penalty corners than its opponent.

Both offenses were bottled up for the majority of the opening half; however, the visitors began to warm to the task as the half continued. Ithaca posted four shot attempts in the second quarter after being held shot-less in the opening 15-minutes. Sophomore Samantha Horowitz and junior Natalie Milliken posted shots on goal during the second quarter, but both were parried away by Oneonta keeper Kristy Campana.

The second half was perhaps most frustrating for Ithaca. The Bombers completely dominated the territorial advantage, but was unable to turn any of that edge in possession into an opening goal. IC outshot the Red Dragons 8-0 over the final 30-minutes of regulation, but Campana stood tall to keep the game scoreless. Most notable was a sequence within the opening five-minutes of the third quarter in which Ithaca generated three penalty corners and four shot attempts.

Ithaca will return to action on Friday, October 25, when it heads to Geneva, New York, to take-on William Smith at 5:00 p.m. The Bombers can officially clinch a berth to the Liberty League Tournament with a victory.
