Rutan Scores as Women's Soccer Defeats Union, 1-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team scored 36:57 into competition and that would prove to be enough as the Bombers topped Union College, 1-0, on Friday afternoon.

Ithaca is now 8-4-1 on the season with a 3-2 mark in the Liberty League while Union falls to 7-5 and 2-3 in the conference.

The game-winner was scored in the 37th minute by first-year Delaney Rutan. Senior Devon Morris sent a long ball up to Rutan, who got a head on it and sent it into the back of the net. The goal marks Rutan's fourth of the season and of her career on South Hill.

Both teams had several promising chances throughout the game.

Junior Kelsey Espenhorst had two shots saved by goalkeeper Alison Sorkenn in the 12th and 17th minutes.

IC continued to push offensively, generating three more shots over the next four minutes, culminating in a big opportunity for Alex Epifani. The junior took a pass on a breakaway and fired off a shot, but Sorkenn made a diving play to keep IC off the board.

The Bombers followed that up immediately with another scoring chance, as Ally Christman placed a beautiful cross into the box, but Epifani's athletic attempt fell short and the ball went the other way.

The Dutchwomen were able to go down the field and create offensive chances themselves.

Senior goalkeeper made her first save of the game on an Erin O'Shea header in the 24th minute. Just over one minute later, Union earned a corner kick, which resulted in a header from Ryan Conway. Jakobsze, however, came up with a huge save on the ball to keep the Dutchwomen off the board.

Ithaca once again went into its offensive end, which eventually led to Rutan's goal.

In the 26th minute, Christman's header sailed to the left of the goal, before Megan O'Reilly's attempt in the 28th minute was saved by Sorkenn.

O'Reilly had another shot blocked in the 32nd minute and Christina DiCesare's ball in the 34th minute was saved by Sorkenn. The Bombers, however, would go on to score just three minutes later.

The Dutchwomen ramped things up after halftime, generating nine of their 12 shots, but Jakobsze and the Bombers' defense held strong.

Jakobsze came up with another save in the 55th minute, this time stopping an Emma Maley shot.

The Bombers took it their way and O'Reilly put a shot on-frame, but Sorkenn was there to stop the ball in the 60th minute.

Union had two solid chances spanning the 61st and 62 minutes. First, a header from Fiona Zimmerman was blocked by an Ithaca defender, before Bell Dworkin's attempt was stopped by Jakobsze. At the 61:35 mark, Emma Schleimer fired off a shot with Jakobsze out of place, but senior McKensie Galusha stopped the ball on the line to preserve IC's lead.

The Bombers continued to pressure, looking to add an insurance goal as the clocked ticked down.

O'Reilly had a shot stopped by Sorkenn in the 63rd minute, before Epifani's attempt was saved in the 65th minute.

Throughout the final 25 minutes of play, Union pressed Ithaca's defense, trying to score the equalizer.

Ithaca's defense blocked a Zimmerman shot in the 77th minute, and again came up with the block on an O'Shea shot in the 80th minute. Jakobsze followed that up with a save as she stopped Dworkin's ball just seconds later.

Union was able to generate one final corner kick, but the Bombers defense held strong en route to the win.

Jakobsze finished the day with six saves for her conference-leading sixth shutout of the year.

Ithaca is back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. with a match against Skidmore. Prior to the game, the Bombers will be honoring their seven seniors: Jakobsze, Jordyn Haynes, Elisa Leavitt, Gabriella Mihale, Morris, Galusha and Christman.
