SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The No. 16 Ithaca College men's soccer team improved to 11-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League with a 3-2 victory over Union on Friday afternoon.
Â
It was the Dutchmen who got on the board first in the 23
rd minute. Up until that point, Union had not generated any offense in the form of shots or corner kicks, but Salvador Lopez, Jr's shot was good to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 edge.
Â
The Bombers pulled even with just over five minutes left to play in the first half, as
Kevin Turi netted a pass from
Tom Dillmann to send the Bombers into halftime tied, 1-1.
Â
Ithaca registered four shots in the first half, including the goal. Just one other attempt was on-goal, as
Kyle Sicke's shot in the 36
th minute was saved by goalkeeper Trevor Krupp.
Â
The Bombers came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, scoring just 1:57 into play. This time, sophomore
Theo Scott scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year, putting away a pass from junior
Jonathan Kyriakidis.
Â
IC would not net let up, earning a corner kick less than two minutes later, which resulted in a
Kevin Turi shot. Krupp was forced to make the play and kept the Bombers from a third goal, temporarily.
Â
After some back-and-forth action, the Bombers broke through for another goal in the 66
th minute. It was
Ali Kapasi who scored this time, on a pass from
Jared Gast, to put IC up 3-1.
Â
In the 74
th minute, Ithaca tested Krupp with back-to-back shots, first from Turi then Kapasi. Krupp successfully stopped both of them, however, to send the ball the other way.
Â
In the 75
th minute, Union pulled within one goal, as Jeremy Conn scored on a pass from Francesco D'Iorio to cut the Bombers' lead to 3-2.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Max Lichtenstein made his first and only save of the game in the 80
th minute, as he stopped a shot from Evan Farr.
Â
The Bombers had one final chance with less than five minutes left, as first-year
Aidan Keenan put a shot on-frame, but Krupp came up with the play. Ithaca's lead would hold until the end, however, resulting in the win.
Â
"This was a great road win against a very offensively talent Union team," said Head Coach
Kyle Dezotell. "We're very proud of the group for mounting such a strong comeback after going behind, 1-0."
Â
The Bombers are back in action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. road contest at Skidmore.
Â
"The guys are excited to get back out there together tomorrow and try to go 1-0 on the day," said Dezotell. "Two games in two days is a lot of soccer but our guys live to compete and will be hungry to try to snag three more Liberty League points."
