Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer and Clarkson Battle to Draw in Liberty League Opener

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team opened up Liberty League play on Saturday with a 0-0 draw with Clarkson.

With the draw, the Bombers are now 6-0-2 on the season with a 0-0-1 mark in the Liberty League while Clarkson sits at 6-1-1 with a 0-0-1 conference mark as well.

The game proved to be a physical, even match-up from the jump, with both teams having chances throughout.

Ithaca had two solid chances in both overtime periods, narrowly missing a win.

In the first overtime, at the 4:39 mark, there was a scramble in the box, which resulted in Jack Monnes controlling a rebound and firing off a shot, but Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs made a big save for the Golden Knights.

Monnes also nearly scored in the second overtime period, again off a rebound, but the shot went slightly wide, to keep the game alive.

Ithaca opened up the game with back-to-back corners and followed that up with another corner kick two minutes later, but Clarkson's defense held strong to clear it out.

Nate Schoen tested Roeloffs for the first time in the ninth minute of play, but the goalkeeper successfully saved it and sent it the other way.

Clarkson strung together an offensive push, starting in the 17th minute with a Stephen Klimek shot, which was blocked by an IC defender. The Golden Knights then recorded a corner kick and followed that up with a John Furcick shot that sailed wide.

In the 21st minute, Clarkson earned a corner kick, followed by another Furcick shot, but Ithaca goalkeeper Max Lichtenstein made his first save of the game on the ball.

The Bombers registered a corner kick in the 29th minute, resulting a header from Ben Quatresols that sailed wide. It was the last shot for IC in the first half.

Lichtenstein came up with another save in the 43rd minute, on a Furcick shot, keeping Clarkson off the board. Matt Adamou followed that up with his own attempt, but the Bombers defense proved to be solid, blocking the shot.

The Golden Knights let off one final shot attempt in the first half, from Erick Naula in the 44th minute, but it sailed high.

Clarkson took the first shot of the second half, but Brandon Bahr's attempted was wide of the goal. The Golden Knights followed that up with another shot, on frame, in the 55th minute. James Homan sent a header in, but Lichtenstein was there to make the save.

Several minutes later, in the 58th minute, Drew Cohn had a header of his own, but in similar fashion, Clarkson's goalkeeper was there to make the play.

Ithaca kept the up the pressure, forcing Roeloffs to make another save in the 61st minute, this time on a shot from Nate Mansfield.

Play was back-and-forth for much of the remainder of the half, with both teams' defense coming up with stops.

A shot from Clarkson's Klimek in the 64th minute was blocked by an Ithaca defender before a Jon Kyriakidis attempt in the 78th minute was blocked by a Golden Knight.

Clarkson had back-to-back shots, which would be the last of regulation, in the 82nd and 83rd minutes. Both shots, from Henry Gomez, Jr. and Josh Eidem were wide.

Like regulation, the first overtime period proved to be a battle, resulting in just one shot for the Bombers and two for Clarkson.

Following Monnes' shot in the 96th minute, the Golden Knights gained control. Adamou's shot in the 99th minute and Klimek's shot in the 100th minute of play were both wide, forcing a second overtime.

Monnes' had the lone shot for either team in the second overtime, leading to the draw.

Statistically, Clarkson out-shot the Bombers, 13-7, but Ithaca had one more shot on goal and corner kick than the Golden Knights.

Lichtenstein finished with three saves in the net for the Bombers while Roeloffs had four.

The Bombers are back in action next Saturday when they travel to St. Lawrence for a 3 p.m. game. The match against the Saints marks the first of three road games for IC, followed up by Hobart on Wednesday, October 3 and Bard on Saturday, October 6.
