OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team continued its momentum on Tuesday evening, picking up its sixth win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Oswego.
Â
The win pushes IC – which was ranked No. 23 in today's D3soccer.com poll – to 6-0-1 on the season, which hasn't happened since 1999.
Â
Ithaca's goal, which proved to be the lone goal of the game on either side, was scored in the 29
th minute of play.
Â
First-year
Thomas Pierce played a long ball into the box, causing Oswego goalkeeper Brian Terra to come out of the net. Senior
Nate Mansfield then beat Terra to the ball and sent a header into the empty net for his third goal of the season. Mansfield now leads the team with three goals, all scored on headers.
Â
The Bombers' defense was solid on the turf against the Lakers, coming up a plethora of big stops. IC's defense also held Oswego to just two shots on the day, both of which were in the second half.
Â
Ithaca had its first real chance in the 14
th minute, which was also the first shot of the game. Following a corner kick from Pierce, senior
Sam Factor sent a header toward goal, but it hit the post and was cleared by Oswego.
Â
Several minutes later, in the 22
nd minute, Terra came up with his first save against the Bombers on a Jon Kyriakidis shot.
Â
Although not statistically a save, Ithaca goalkeeper
Max Lichtenstein made a big play with 20 minutes left in the half on an Oswego breakaway. Lichtenstein headed off the ball, stopping the Lakers' momentum and sending things the other way.
Â
Following Ithaca's goal, a
Jack Monnes shot in the 36
th minute also hit the post and sailed away from the goal.
Â
The Bombers finished the first half with a total of seven shots, while not allowing the Lakers any shot attempts.
Â
Ithaca's first shot attempt in the second half was a header from senior
Nate Schoen, which went wide. That was followed up by a corner kick which resulted in a
Ben Quatresols shot, which sailed high.
Â
The Lakers registered their first shot of the game in the 72
nd minute, but RJ Nichol's attempt went wide of the goal. Oswego had another shot in the 81
st minute, but it was blocked by an Ithaca defender.
Â
Statistically, Ithaca registered 10 shots on the day versus Oswego's two. The Bombers also had eight corner kicks while the Lakers registered three.
Â
"We put in a great effort tonight. Midweek games on the road after long bus trips are never easy, but I thought our mentality was excellent once again," said Head Coach
Kyle Dezotell. "Oswego made it hard for us, especially in the second half, but I thought we were excellent defensively and fully deserved to win this game."
Â
Ithaca is back in action on Saturday afternoon for the Liberty League opener against Clarkson University at Carp Wood Field. The matchup is slated for 2 p.m.
