Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw with Nazareth

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Nazareth on Saturday afternoon at Carp Wood Field.

It was the first tie for either team so far this season as the Bombers are now 5-0-1 on the season while Nazareth in 3-2-1.

Ithaca got on the board first with an early goal in the 16th minute of play.

Junior Gabriella Mihale and Alex Epifani worked out a nice give-and-go which ultimately led to Mihale scoring her third goal of the season. After taking the final pass from Epifani, Mihale corralled and controlled the ball into the box, where she sent a shot in past a diving Hannah Miller to put IC up 1-0.

After nearly 63 minutes of scoreless play, the Golden Flyers scored the game-tying goal in the 79th minute. Ashley Plane sent a pass to Kristen Prohaska who found the back of the net to tie things up.

Ithaca was not without its chances, forcing Miller to come up with a total of 10 saves throughout the game.

Following the Bombers' goal in the first half, Ally Christman wasted no time in testing Miller again in goal in both the 19th and 22nd minutes, but Miller was successful in stopping the ball both times.

Miller also made a save on a Sarah Pirnie shot in the 29th minute, keeping IC's lead to just one goal.

Nazareth's best chance to score in the first half was early on, in the 12th minute when Mary LoCicero chipped a shot towards Jakobsze, who made an athletic save on the ball to keep the Golden Flyers off the board.

The Bombers had control of the ball out of halftime and wasted no time in trying to add to their lead. Just 43 seconds in, Alex Epifani put a ball on frame but Miller once again made the save. In the 50th minute, Miller came up with another stop on a Christman shot.

In the 63rd minute, a shot from Nazareth's Maggie McKay was blocked by an Ithaca defender before a Mihale shot in the 66th minute was saved by Miller.

The Bombers' had one more solid shot attempt in the 73rd minute on a shot from first-year Megan O'Reilly, but Miller was there again to stop it.

Following the Golden Flyers' goal, IC registered one shot but it was blocked by a Nazareth defender.

In the 88th minute, Jakobsze made her second save of the day on an Abby Salvaggio shot, which forced overtime.

The first overtime period did not present a lot of scoring opportunities for either team, as IC recorded the lone to shots, both of which went high of the goal.

Things picked up in the second overtime period, as the Bombers had four shots with two on goal, as well as two corner kicks.

Back-to-back shots from Christina DiCesare and Elise Leavitt went wide before the Bombers earned a corner kick in the 109th minute.

The corner kick led to a shot from Reid Garner and another from Epifani, but Miller made the save on both of them.

Statistically, the Bombers outshot Nazareth 17-7 while also tallying four more corners than the Golden Flyers. Jakobsze finished with two saves on the day.

Ithaca is back in action on Wednesday with a non-conference contest at home against Mount St. Mary. It will be the final game for the Bombers before starting conference play next Saturday, September 22, at Clarkson.
