AUBURN, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team defeated Alfred State, 12-1, on Wednesday evening at Falcon Park in Auburn behind an all-around solid performance from the offense, defense and pitching staff. Ithaca is now 23-14 on the season with two games left before the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.
Defensively, Ithaca turned five double plays and senior
Tyler Hill tossed seven superb innings on the mound to highlight the win. Hill struck out eight batters, scattered three hits and allowed an unearned run.
Ithaca got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by junior
Webb Little. Senior
Domenic Boresta scored on the play after he led off the game by reaching on an error and then moved around the diamond on a stolen base and passed ball. Boresta, who also stole two bases on Wednesday, has extended his streak of reaching base safely to 20 straight games.
Alfred State had its first opportunity to tie or take the lead in the top of the second as the Pioneers loaded the bases with two outs. After a strikeout-wild pitch, Alfred State strung together back-to-back singles, but senior
Tyler Hill forced a fly out to centerfield to get out of the jam.
The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 in the third on a wild pitch. Alfred State's lead-off batter of the frame sent a deep fly ball to center, which was dropped, and allowed the runner to move all the way to third before coming home on the errant pitch.
The Bombers regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to center by freshman
Garrett Callaghan. Junior
Jake Generali scored from second on the base hit after he walked earlier in the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, freshman
Andrew Wollner gave the Bombers a 3-1 advantage with a sac fly to center. Junior
Matt Carey came home after he led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch.
The inning continued with a two-run screaming double down the right field line by W. Little that plated Boresta and Generali. Â After a pitching change, junior
Andrew Bailey staked the Bombers to a 6-1 lead with an RBI triple to centerfield.
Carey extended the Bombers' lead to 8-1 in the seventh with a double off the left-center fence with the bases loaded to bring in two runs. Bailey and Callaghan scored after reaching on walks. Alfred State went to the bullpen again, and on the first pitch, freshman
Jack Lynch singled through the right side to push another run across. The inning was capped off with a sac fly to left by sophomore
Chris Dietz to push the lead to 10-1.
Ithaca added two more runs in the bottom of the eight to account for the final score of 12-1. Junior
Jackson Smith notched an RBI single and then fellow junior
John Peterson drove in the final run for IC with a groundout.
Carey doubled twice and drove in two runs, while W. Little had three RBI. Generali scored three times with two walks and a steal.
The Bombers will host Elmira tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. for their regular season home finale. IC concludes its regular season on Saturday at Wells at 1 p.m.
