ORANGE, Calif. – The Ithaca College baseball team was dealt an 11-2 loss at the hands of Chapman University in Orange, Calif. on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops Ithaca to 4-5 on the season, while Chapman improves to 11-7.
Ithaca immediately generated a scoring threat in the top of the first inning by loading the bases on a pair of walks and an error, but the Bombers were unable to produce a run.
The Bombers got on the board in the top of the second inning on an RBI single through the left side by junior
Jake Generali to bring in senior
Domenic Boresta, which gave IC a 1-0 lead. Boresta led off the inning with a walk and then stole second before moving up to third on a groundout.
In the bottom of the second, Chapman took a 2-1 lead. The Panthers' leadoff batter reached on an error and then scored on a double. After a bunt single put runners on the corners, another Ithaca error allowed a run to cross home for the second run of the inning.
The lead grew to 3-1 in the bottom of the third for the Panthers as a leadoff single came around to score after another Ithaca error and a double play.
Chapman scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 7-1. After the leadoff batter was retired, the Panthers strung together three straight singles to load the bases. A double down the left field line brought in two runs, but a potential third run was thrown out at the plate on a relay from Boresta to freshman
Jack Lynch to junior
Adam Gallagher at the plate. After that, Chapman drilled a two-run home run to left field, which forced senior
Tyler Hill out of the game.
Ithaca got a run back in the top of the fifth on a run-scoring hit by junior
Andrew Bailey, which brought in Generali from second base. Generali led off the inning with a single, moved up a base on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout.
The Chapman lead moved back to six runs at 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth as a two-out double scored on an ensuing base hit to right field. Another run crossed for the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out triple to center, which made the score 9-2.
Chapman reached double digits in the contest, 11-2, with two runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and single for the eventual final score.
Bailey, Generali and junior
Cam Fuoti each had two hits for Ithaca to account for the offensive production.
