TROY, N.Y. – On November 1, Liberty League commissioner Tracy King announced that 619 fall sport student-athletes have qualified for the league's All-Academic Teams in their respective sports, among the highest totals for fall sports since the league began recognizing outstanding academic achievement.
The Liberty League's fall championship sports include men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic team a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30. The Liberty League elevated the GPA requirement from 3.20 to 3.30 in 2016-17 to follow the established standard for eligibility for CoSIDA Academic All-America awards. The highest total for the fall was 620 student-athletes during the 2015 season when the GPA requirement was 3.20.
A total of 101 Ithaca College student-athletes across seven sports earned this distinction. Volleyball led its sport with 11 recipients, while men's cross country tied for the most with 13. Football had 21 honorees, women's soccer was recognized by 18 student-athletes, women's cross country had 15, field hockey tallied 14 recipients and men's soccer added nine to IC's total.
"Academic success is a great point of pride for our Liberty League institutions and student-athletes," said King. "Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate that it is possible to not only excel academically, but to achieve athletically at the highest levels in Division III. I congratulate and salute them on their outstanding achievements."
The All-Liberty League teams will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 6, for men's and women's soccer, and Wednesday, Nov. 7 for field hockey and volleyball.
