Men’s Soccer Falls to St. Lawrence 3-1 in Liberty League Home Opener

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team made its Liberty League home debut on Saturday afternoon when it welcomed St. Lawrence to Carp Wood Field for a 2:00 p.m. kick. Unfortunately, two late strikes by the visiting Saints sent IC to an 0-2-0 start to league play, as the Bombers fell to 4-4-1 on the year in a 3-1 defeat.

Senior midfielder Eric Hepler scored a 51st-minute equalizer in the loss. The goal was his second scoring tally of the season, while Zack Lichtman provided the assist on the score. Freshman keeper Max Lichtenstein made six saves in his first appearance since the Hamilton game over two weeks ago. The defeat dropped his record to 3-2-1 on the year.

It was a frenetic pace to begin the contest as both sides jumped out to an energetic start to the contest. Lichtenstein in particular was quite busy during the opening minutes. He was pressed into action just two minutes into the game, as he denied St. Lawrence's Charlton Kelly and Ryan Roche on back-to-back saves.

Lichtenstein's finest piece of play during the half may have come in the eighth minute. The rookie showed poise and timing beyond his years in darting off his line to close the angle on Tapshak Augustine, who worked his way behind the IC backline. Augustine's shot was parried away by Lichtenstein on a sprawling leg save at the top of the 10-yard box.

After the initial spell by the visitors, Ithaca put on some scoring pressure of its own just over 20 minutes into the game. The Bombers won a pair of corner kicks and used them to generate some threatening chances on the St. Lawrence goal. Max Barish had three cracks at goal, but two of his shots were drifted high of the mark, while St. Lawrence keeper Mike Smith parried away a third shot that was on target.

St. Lawrence broke through in the 35th-minute of action. Working on a corner kick, the Saints maintained possession off the reorganization and Stephen Dorney rippled the netting with a perfectly placed shot to give the visitors a 1-0 just 10 minutes before halftime.

It did not take long for Ithaca to equalize after the break. This time it was the Bombers that capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Lichtman whipped in an arcing cross that Hepler guided into the side netting to level the game at 1-1 with 39:14 left in regulation.

The two defenses locked-in for a tactical battle down the stretch. Both sides were only able to generate two shot attempts during the remainder of regulation. Unfortunately, it was the visitors that were able to capitalize on the chances. Taylor Williams scored a go-ahead goal in the 76th-minute of play to put the visitors up 2-1, while Charlton Kelly finished off a pass from Jethro Dede to effectively seal the game for St. Lawrence in the 86th-minute.

Ithaca returns to Carp Wood Field for the second game of its three-game homestand on Wednesday, October 4, when it welcomes Hobart for a crucial Liberty League clash. Opening kick is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
