SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team kicked off its final tournament of the fall non-traditional season on Friday when it sent five total players to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals, hosted by Skidmore College. Unfortunately, no Bombers advanced to tomorrow's rounds in the winner's bracket, despite turning in some strong performances on the first day of the annual tournament.

Ithaca had four netters in the 64-player draw in singles, while IC also sent a pair of doubles tandems in the 32-team draw.  Juniors
Kathryn Shaffer and
Taylor Ginestro, as well as sophomore
Brianna Ruback and freshman
Sara Steinberg earned placement in the singles portion of the tournament. Additionally, Ruback and Shaffer formed a tandem and junior
Hannah Kasoff paired with Ginestro to compete in the doubles draw.

Ithaca's lone win on the day came in the singles draw, as Ruback scored a triumph in the opening round of the tournament. Going up against Charlotte Engebrecht of William Smith, IC's talented sophomore was clinical in scoring an easy straight-sets win. Ruback conceded just three total games in a clinical effort, winning the match 6-2, 6-1 to advance into a matchup against the fourth overall seed in Kate Christensen of Vassar College.

Ruback struggled to contend with the Brewers' talented netter in the Round of 32, scoring a pair of games, but was unable to push in either set. Christensen defeated Ruback 6-0, 6-2 to conclude Ithaca's day in singles.

Also competing on the first day, Shaffer lost a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Audrey Chor of Hamilton College. Ginestro was unable to score a game in 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Anna Maria Buraya of NYU. Steinberg performed well in her first collegiate ITA's, scoring three games in a loss to Haley Sherrard of St. Lawrence 6-1, 6-2.

Ithaca dropped both of its doubles matches in the Round of 16, as both teams lost in 8-2 decisions. Ruback and Shaffer's defeat came at the rackets of Renee Karchere-Sun and Brianna Greene of Skidmore. Ginestro and Kasoff had a difficult test against Vassar's fifth-seed combo of Frances Cornwall and Meghan Rodick. The duo returned to the courts for a consolation match against a grouping from TCNJ, but IC's combo was unable to win in an 8-2 decision.
