Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Bombers extended their win streak to six games today, sweeping Stevens in a crucial Empire 8 doubleheader.
Ithaca recorded 12 hits in the first game, securing a 9-0 victory over the Ducks in six innings, while notching eight hits in the second to win 5-2.
Senior
Jessie Fleck led the Bomber offense with four hits and three walks, while sophomore
Vanessa Brown and junior
Allie Colleran each pitched in three RBI.
Game 1
Ithaca's offense continued its hot streak, recording nine runs on 12 hits to run-rule Stevens 9-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Colleran got on base in the top of the first inning after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Fleck's double to right center field, giving Ithaca its first two runners in scoring position with no outs. Sophomore
Alex Wright grounded out to second base, but it was enough to push Colleran across the plate to give Ithaca the early 1-0 lead.
Stevens had runners on second and third with one out thanks to a walk and an error, but sophomore
Haley Congdon forced a pop out and a groundout to end the frame.
The second inning saw little offense from either team, with Stevens garnering the lone baserunner on a Marissa Barnes single to left field.
The Bombers put up a five-spot in the top of the third frame, extending their lead to 6-0 over the Ducks.
Nikkey Skuraton reached base on an error by Stevens' left fielder, allowing her to advance to second to start the inning. Colleran got on base on the next at bat with her second walk of the game. Fleck registered her second hit of the day, this time a single to second. The bases were loaded for sophomore Brown and she delivered, singling through the right side to put Ithaca up 2-0.
With the bases still loaded and one out, Stevens' pitcher Christine LaRochelle walked freshman
Abby Shields, giving the Bombers a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Hannah Anderson stepped up the to the plate next, scoring two runs on a double to right field. Sophomore
Annie Cooney grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Shields for Ithaca's final run of the inning.
Stevens threated to score in the bottom of the third after the team had the bases loaded with two outs, but the Bombers forced a groundout to end the frame with no damage done.
Ithaca put up another run in the top of the fourth thanks to another Brown RBI-single, giving the Bombers a 7-0 advantage. Colleran singled to the pitcher with Skuraton already on base thanks to a hit by pitch. The junior stole second with runners on the corners, but the Ducks forced Skuraton out at home, keeping the game at 6-0. Fleck came up to the plate next, singling to the pitcher and advancing Colleran to third. Brown came up in a big way at the plate once again, singling through the left side to score Colleran.
The Ducks singled to kick off the bottom of the fourth inning, but Ithaca strung together a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt and pop out to end the frame, still holding onto a 7-0 lead,
The fifth inning was three-up, three-down for both squads, with Congdon picking up her third strikeout of the game.
The Bombers added two more runs to their total in the top of the sixth frame with Colleran's fourth homerun in as many games. Skuraton started the inning with a single up the middle, then Colleran blasted a homerun over the center field fence to put the Bombers up 9-0.
With their backs against the wall, the Ducks' Cara Napolitano singled with one out to try and start a Stevens' rally. The Ducks were able to put another runner on after an Ithaca fielding error, but Congdon struck out the final batter to clinch the victory.
Fleck led the way for the Bombers, finishing with four hits, while Brown, Colleran and Anderson each pitched in two RBI. Congdon pitched all six innings, notching her ninth win of the season. The sophomore allowed seven hits, while striking out four to keep the shutout intact.
Game 2
The Bombers won the second game after its defense shut down the Ducks, only allowing two runs on six hits.
Ithaca got on the board again early in the second game of the doubleheader, pushing two runs across in the first inning. Fleck found herself on base after a walk and then stole second before Brown was issued a walk of her own. With two runners on, freshman
Shannon Grage doubled down the right field line, scoring both.
Stevens' Corrine Loncar registered a two-out single in the bottom of the first, but freshman
Emily Holden forced a groundout to hold on the lead.
Holden walked to lead off the top of the second and advanced to second on
Ellie Murray's single to left field. The Ducks attempted a pickoff attempt on Murray, but the ball got away, allowing Holden to move to third. Consecutive walks to Fleck and Brown pushed Ithaca's third run of the game across the plate, but the Ducks ended any more of a threat with a Wright fielder's choice.
Napolitano walked to kick off the bottom of the third and Olivia Gemma singled to give runners on first and second with no outs. Barnes grounded out on a fielder's choice, advancing both runners 60 feet. Holden struck out the next batter and forced a groundout to end the frame.
After the Ducks' shut down the Bombers in the top of the third, Stevens scored its first run of the two games on an Ithaca error. Samantha Schattin walked and stole second with one out to give Stevens a runner in scoring position. Farryl Groder reached base on an error by Ithaca's shortstop, allowing Schattin to score.
Ithaca registered two baserunners in the top of the fourth inning, but could not garner enough offense to score either. The Bombers then forced Stevens into a three-and-out bottom of the frame to keep the game at 3-1.
Both teams retired the other in order in the fifth inning, but Ithaca was able to get two baserunners in the top of the sixth, with walks issued to Skuraton and Fleck. The Ducks got out of the frame with a groundout, keeping the score at 3-1, Ithaca.
Loncar singled up the middle to start the bottom of the sixth inning, but was forced out at second on Groder's fielder's choice. Napolitano then had recorded a fielder's choice at her own, with Ithaca getting Groder out at second base. Napolitano moved to second on a wild pitch and Gemma walked to give the Ducks two baserunners, but the Bombers forced a groundout to get out of the inning with no damage.
The Bombers picked up two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning in route to their 5-2 victory. Grage picked up her second hit of the game in the seventh inning, singling to center field with one out to start an Ithaca rally. Cooney singled to left, advancing
Emily Bloom, who pinch ran for Grage, to second. Holden received her second free pass of the day to load up the bases and Skuraton singled to shortstop to score Bloom.
Colleran came up to bat with the bases loaded and was issued her first free pass of the day, earning a RBI.
Stevens fought back in the bottom of the seventh inning, starting with a two-out triple by Emily Sellitti. She scored on a RBI-single by Schattin to cut Ithaca's lead to just three runs, but the Bombers were able to force a groundout to win the game.
Ithaca notched five runs on eight hits, with Grage leading the way with two hits of her own. She also pitched in two RBIs to clinch the victory and move to 18-6 on the year. Holden picked up her eighth win of the season, allowing six hits while striking out three.
The Bombers are back in action on Tuesday as they host SUNY Oneonta at Kostrinsky Field. Game times are slated for 3 and 5 p.m. and live video and stats will be available for both games.
