ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team was back in action on Saturday afternoon, as the Bombers welcomed Hamilton College for their final home match of the season. Although IC took a 2-1 lead into singles action, the Continentals were able to score 4-of-6 bouts during the second half of the match to squeeze past Ithaca in a narrow 5-4 decision. The loss drops IC's record to 13-6 on the year.
Highlighting the action on the day was the doubles portion of play. Kusak became Ithaca's all-time winningest doubles player in program history, combining with sophomore
Caroline Dunn for an 8-4 triumph over Hamilton's Winnie Tang and Jane Haffer in the top flight. The victory was the 67
th of her career, pushing her past Christina Nunez '14 who Kusak was tied with coming into today's action.
The Bombers took two-of-three doubles tilts to take a 2-1 lead into the second half of the match. Sophomores
Taylor Ginestro and
Hannah Kasoff scored their first victory as a tandem this spring with an 8-4 win over the Continentals' Claudia Morse and Iona Forrester in the third flight.
Ithaca nearly took a 3-0 lead into singles, but the Bombers were turned away in the second flight of doubles play. Grosberg and freshman
Brianna Ruback held leads throughout their competitive matchup against Hamilton's Claire Keyte and Samantha Weeks. IC's duo held leads throughout the match, but the visitors were able to score a crucial break to force a tiebreaker. Keyte and Weeks edged Grosberg and Ruback 7-5 in the tiebreak to secure a crucial point, which proved to be a turning point in the match.
Although Ruback was able to score a victory in the second flight, besting Hamilton's Keyte 6-2, 6-4, the Continentals were able to snag four of the first five singles bouts to finish to seal the match. Ginestro concluded the match on a high note for IC, scoring a 6-3, 6-2 straight-sets decision over Hamilton's Morse.
Ithaca returns to action with the final regular season match of the year when it travels to Connecticut College on Sunday, April 30. The Bombers will find out their NCAA Tournament First Round opponent on Monday, May 8.
