HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ithaca College baseball team fell to 7-6 on the season and 0-2 in the Empire 8 Conference with a 4-2 setback to Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday evening at Dobbelaar Field in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens improves to 10-9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Empire 8. Ithaca was the home team in the contest, as the games were originally scheduled to be played at Freeman Field.
Stevens quickly built a 2-0 lead over the Bombers with a two-run home run to right-centerfield with one out in the top of the first inning. Junior
Jack Morello would settle in after that and struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
The Bombers got a run back in the bottom half of the third inning on a solo homer by senior
Josh Savacool to left field, which was his first career round-tripper.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ithaca tied the game up at 2-2, which was aided by two errors committed by the Ducks. Sophomore
Matt Carey beat out an infield single and then moved up a base on an errant throw. Junior
Domenic Boresta followed with a base hit to center field, and the ensuing throw to third base skipped away to allow Carey to come home.
The Bombers had two runners on in the eighth but could not get a run across as back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat and kept the score at 2-2.
Stevens went back ahead in the top of the ninth as the Ducks plated two runs. Stevens used three hits, a sacrifice bunt, stolen base and wild pitch to manufacture the eventual game-winning runs.
Junior
Jack Morello took the loss in a complete game effort. Morello fanned 10 batters and allowed four runs on seven hits.
Ithaca and Stevens square off tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Dobbelaar Field.
