Thompson Goes 5-for-6 to Lead Ithaca Past Whittier, 11-9

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Ithaca College baseball team broke out the bats on Thursday evening at Whitter College as the Bombers recorded 14 hits, including seven doubles to get past the Poets in an 11-9 shootout at Memorial Field in Whittier, Calif. Ithaca gets back in the win column to run its record to 5-3, while Whittier falters to 5-15.

Senior Trevor Thompson produced one of the best games of his career, as he went 5-for-6 at the plate with three doubles, a run scored and one RBI. Classmate Ryan Dougherty was 2-for-5 at the dish with three RBI and a pair of doubles.

Sophomore Webb Little jump-started the offensive onslaught on Thursday with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.

Whittier tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bombers answered with five straight runs over the second and third frames. Dougherty drove in a pair on a two-bagger in the second and the W. Little followed shortly after with a sacrifice fly. In the third, sophomore Sam Little scored on an error and senior Ryan Henchey crossed the plate on a groundout by sophomore Adam Gallagher.

The Poets got two runs back in their half of the third to make the score 6-3. Dougherty and Thompson would drive in runs in the fourth and fifth innings on doubles to push Ithaca's lead back out to five runs, 8-3, midway through the game.

After two came home for Whittier in the bottom of the fifth, the Bombers responded with three runs in the sixth on a two RBI double by Henchey and an error that allowed sophomore Andrew Bailey to score to give Ithaca an 11-6 advantage. The Poets would fight back with two runs in their half of the sixth, but that was the closest they could get.

Henchey, senior Josh Savacool and sophomore Matt Carey also collected two hits each in the victory. S. Little walked three times and scored twice.

Sophomore Jake Binder picked up the win for Ithaca in five innings of work. Binder surrendered seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks. Freshman Yutaro Yamaguchi tossed 2/3 of an inning before giving way to classmate Matt Eiel for 2.1 innings of effective relief. Bailey threw the final inning and locked up the game with a double play.

The Bombers are at the University of Redlands tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. PDT (6 p.m. Eastern).
