Women’s Basketball Tops Elmira at Home, 68-60

ITHACA, N.Y. – Three different players reached double figures as the Ithaca College women's basketball team improved its winning streak to eight straight with a 68-60 Empire 8 Conference win over Elmira College on Tuesday evening inside Ben Light Gymnasium. Ithaca, which is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, is now 19-3 on the season and 11-2 in the conference. Elmira drops to 6-15 and 2-10 in the E8.

Elmira jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Bombers early on, but Ithaca fought back to knot the game at 9-9 with 4:46 left in the first quarter. Elmira would regain the lead at 13-11, but the Bombers would end the period on an 8-0 run to take a 19-13 lead to the second stanza.

Freshman Cassidy O'Malley scored five points in the frame, including a 3-pointer with 1:59 left to begin the run.

The Ithaca defense would continue to lock down Elmira as the Soaring Eagles were held scoreless for nearly six minutes over the first and second quarters. Elmira finally snapped its drought by converting a pair of free throws with 7:31 remaining to cut the Bombers' advantage to 23-15.

After another pair of makes by Elmira at the line a minute later, Ithaca scored four quick points in 30 seconds on layups from seniors Erin Ferguson and Ali Ricchiuti to push the Bombers' lead back out to 10 at 27-17. Elmira would get back to within nine with 3:46 to play, 30-21, but a basket from sophomore Sara Jackson gave Ithaca another double-digit lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the period and went to the break with a 37-25 cushion.

Ferguson led the way with nine points and four rebounds over the first 20 minutes, while O'Malley and Jackson each had seven points.

The Bombers added two points to their lead after three quarters of play as they outscored Elmira, 15-13. Ithaca led by as many as 17 in the period, 44-27, with 7:49 to go, but Elmira was able to pull to within 10 at the 3:38 mark, 46-36. O'Malley and Ricchiuti each tallied four points.

Ithaca maintained its double-digit advantage until there was 2:26 left in the game as Elmira connected on a 3-pointer to bring the score to within a 64-57 spread. The Soaring Eagles drilled another three to get to within six points at 66-60, but Ricchiuti put the game away with a layup and just 1:06 remaining.

Ricchiuti and O'Malley paced Ithaca's offense with 13 points each, while Ferguson chipped in 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Ricchiuti also added four rebounds and two steals, while O'Malley pulled down six rebounds.

Jackson finished with nine points, while sophomores Allie Tunick and Meghan Mazzella each had six points. Tunick dished out five assists with three steals as well.

Ithaca shot 27-for-67 (40.3-percent) in the game and notched 15 steals. Elmira was 18-for-50 overall (36.0%) and turned the ball over 27 times, which led to 22 points on Ithaca's end of the floor.

The Bombers host Hartwick College on Saturday, February 11 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day. Saturday's matchup will be another battle for first in the conference standings for Ithaca, as the Bombers and Hartwick both own 11-2 records.
