Women's Soccer Downs Skidmore in First Liberty League Win

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team earned its first Liberty League win on Friday afternoon, topping Skidmore 2-1 at Carp Wood Field.

The Bombers scored both their goals in the first half en route to the conference victory. Ithaca is now 4-8 on the season with a 1-4 mark in the Liberty league while Skidmore is now 2-8-1 and 0-3-1 in conference action.

Ithaca got on the board first with a goal in the 27th minute of play. An Alex Epifani shot went through the fingers of Skidmore goalie Alyssa Rollins, and junior Sam Robinson was there to push the ball into the back of the net to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead.

Nearly 10 minutes later the Thoroughbreds evened the score on a goal by Courtney Shaw in the 37th minute.

A determined Ithaca squad kept up the pressure and added its second goal in the 43rd minute to take back the lead.

Robinson made it past several Skidmore defenders and sent in a shot, which was deflected by Rollins. Jordyn Haynes, however, was there to send in the shot for the go-ahead goal. The two Bombers' goals would end up being enough to secure the win.

Ithaca gained momentum right from the start, registering several promising shots in the opening minutes.

Less than three minutes in, senior Kristyn Alonzo drilled a breakaway shot over Rollins' head, but it was slightly too high and went off the cross bar, giving Skidmore defenders the chance to secure and clear the ball.

In the 6th minute, junior Shoshana Bedrosian got a breakaway pass from Alonzo, but Rollins' laid out to make the save for the Thoroughbreds.

One of the most promising opportunities Ithaca had in the second half was in the 67th minute when senior Shannon McMillan blasted a shot from 25 yards out. The shot hit off the cross bar and looked like it would find its way into the goal, but Rollins ended up stopping and controlling it.

Statistically, the Bombers dominated, registering 15 shots compared to Skidmore's five. Ithaca also recorded 10 corners while the Thoroughbreds had two.

Ithaca goalie Stacey DiGiorgio earned the win, making two saves. Rollins tallied five saves for Skidmore.

The Bombers are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. against Union.

Ithaca is dedicating the game to Unite for HER, an organization that raises money to provide complementary therapies to men and women in the Ithaca community affected by breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink. Following the game, the Bombers will also be hosting an ice cream social in order to raise awareness and funds for Unite for HER.
