ELMIRA, N.Y. – Junior
Jordan Beers put together a near perfect shooting performance on Saturday afternoon to help the Ithaca College women's basketball team defeat Elmira College on the road, 98-54. Beers led all scorers in the game with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, 4-for-4 from 3-point range and 3-for-3 at the free throw line. With the victory, Ithaca improves to 13-3 on the season and 5-2 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Ithaca, which shot over 56-percent in all three shooting categories (39-for-69 overall, 9-for-16 from 3-point range and 11-for-16 at the free throw line), only trailed in the game for the opening 2:09 before taking over. Elmira netted the contest's first four points before the Bombers answered with back-to-back layups from seniors
Erin Ferguson and
Ali Ricchiuti. After the 4-4 deadlock, Ithaca would outscore Elmira, 19-9, the rest of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Beers scored Ithaca's first 12 points of the stanza to give the Bombers a 20-point lead, 35-15, with 6:15 on the clock. Over the remainder of the frame, Ithaca added 12 more points to its advantage and took a 56-24 cushion to the break.
Ricchiuti had eight points in the half, while junior
Julie Yacovoni added six more. Sophomores
Meghan Mazzella and
Annie Giannone, and freshman
Cassidy O'Malley each chipped in four points over the first 20 minutes.
The Bombers' lead grew to as many as 43 points midway through the third quarter, 69-26, on a made free throw from junior
Erin Woop. As the third period came to an end, Mazzella connected on a 3-pointer to put Ithaca back up by 40 points at 81-41.
Ithaca's largest lead of the contest came at the 7:56 mark of the fourth quarter at 88-43 on a pair of free throws by O'Malley.
Ricchiuti would finish with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while O'Malley poured in 11 points with three blocks, three rebounds and two steals. Yacovoni, Mazzella and junior
Allison Spaschak each tallied nine points. Yacovoni also contributed six rebounds, three blocks and three steals, while Mazzella grabbed five boards.
Giannone contributed eight points (3-of-5 shooting), five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Sophomore
Sara Jackson had five points and three boards in the win.
The Bombers return home next Thursday, January 26 for a 6 p.m. tip-off against Utica College in Ben Light Gymnasium.
