Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stevens Too Much for Women’s Basketball on the Road, 74-43

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team suffered a 74-43 Empire 8 Conference loss at Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening in Canavan Arena. With the loss, Ithaca is now 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8, while Stevens improves to 6-7 and 5-1 in conference play.

Over the opening 2:03 of the game, Ithaca and Stevens traded baskets up to a 6-6 tie. The Ducks then went on an 11-1 run in a four-minute stretch to build a 17-7 lead. Ithaca pulled to within six points, 19-13, on baskets from seniors Ali Ricchiuti and Shayna Gaskins, and junior Julie Yacovoni by the 2:10 mark of the period, but Stevens went back up by nine, 25-16, with 10 seconds to play in the stanza.

Early on in the second period, a 3-pointer from sophomore Sara Jackson and a layup from senior Erin Ferguson brought the Bombers to within six-point spread both times,  27-21 and 29-23, but Stevens answered with a 6-0 run by the 4:07 mark to go up by 12 points at 35-23. An and-one from Yacovoni less than 20 seconds later pulled Ithaca back to a single-digit deficit, but it was short lived, as Stevens went right back up by 11 and never looked back. The first half ended with a 41-30 cushion for the Ducks.

Yacovoni led Ithaca in the first half with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting, while Ferguson notched eight points on 4-of-6 from the field.

Stevens put the contest out of reach in the third quarter as it outscored Ithaca, 20-3. The Bombers made just one basket in the period at 6:42 and was held scoreless for nearly six minutes until a made free throw ended the drought.

The disparity grew to as many as 35 in the fourth quarter before the final tally of 74-43. Ithaca scored just 13 points in the second half, while Stevens netted 33.

Ferguson and Yacovoni both finished with 10 points, while senior Shayna Gaskins chipped in nine points.

Ithaca shot 26.2-percent (17-for-65) in the game, while Stevens converted 50-percent of its chances (31-for-62).

The Bombers return to the hardwood on Thursday as they travel to Houghton College for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
