CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team nearly handed nationally-ranked St. Lawrence its first upset of the season on Saturday before falling in the second overtime, 2-1, in the North Country Classic at St. Lawrence's Sandy MacAllaster Field. With the loss, Ithaca falls to 0-2-0 while the Saints, which entered the day ranked 11th in the latest National Coaches Association of America poll, improved to 2-0-0.
The Bombers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute after some quick passing found the foot of
Eric Hepler who notched his first-career goal on the play.Â
Alexander Brosnihan and
Sam Boylan were each credited with an assist on the play.
Ithaca would hold the lead until the 67th minute when the Bombers misplayed a ball in the defensive zone and inadvertently scored on their own cage to allow the Saints right back into the contest.
Both teams tried to net the difference-maker over the final 20 minutes of play but after 90 minutes a winner still hadn't been decided and overtime would be played to decide the outcome. Neither team was able to break through in the first overtime period with the Bombers recording one shot in the frame. In the second overtime period, St. Lawrence earned three straight corner kicks before scoring the game winning goal in the 105th minute on a header at the far post.
Dan Hinckley started in goal for the Bombers and took the loss after making four saves.
The Bombers will continue with their four-game road trip to open the season at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday when they duel Cortland.
