NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Ithaca College women's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 win over The Sage Colleges on Saturday in the opening round of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament at South Turf Field in New Paltz. With the win, Ithaca, which is ranked 23rd in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, won its eighth consecutive season-opener and is now 1-0-0 while the Gators suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 2-1-0 overall.
Ithaca dominated the ball throughout the contest as the Bombers surrendered just three shots to the Gators' offense while peppering the Sage backline with 25 shots including 15 on goal. The Bombers were also awarded nine corner kick opportunities while the Gators did not take a corner all game.
After a scoreless first half of play, Ithaca finally broke through in the 61st minute when freshman
Jordyn Haynes found the back of the net for her first-collegiate goal with
Megan Nash earning an assist on the play.
Less than ninety seconds later in the 62nd minute, Haynes struck again after a crossing pass from
Jocelyn Ravesi found its mark to give the Bombers a two-goal lead.
The Bombers continued to control the pace of play as time ticked away. Ithaca would take three more shots while imiting the Gators to just one over the final 25 minutes.
Senior
Karen Macke got the start in goal for the Bombers and earned her first collegiate win in the process. She made one save in 45 minutes of action.Â
Stacey DiGiorgio also saw time in net and turned away the only shot she faced.
Ravesi tallied a game-high seven shots for Ithaca while
Taylor Baranowsky took six shots, four of which were on goal. Nash had four shots and Haynes and
Aimee Chimera were each credited with two.
The Bombers will continue with the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament at 12 p.m. on Sunday when they take on host New Paltz.
