Baseball Cranks Four Homeruns in Sweep of Elmira

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team earned an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader sweep of Elmira College, 4-1 and 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field. With the victories, Ithaca is now 23-14 overall and 12-5 in the Empire 8, while Elmira drops to 14-24 and 4-13 in the conference.

Over the two games, Ithaca combined to record nine extra base hits – five doubles and four homeruns.The Bombers also received two complete game pitching performances on the mound.

GAME ONE: Ithaca 4, Elmira 1

The Bombers plated two runs in the bottom of the first on three straight hits. Freshman Webb Little got things started with an opposite field double and then junior Trevor Thompson followed with a double to left-center. Freshman Sam Little drove in Thompson with a single up the middle for Ithaca's second run.

Elmira got on the board with an unearned on a sacrifice fly in the second to cut Ithaca's lead to 2-1.

In the top of the fifth, Elmira placed a runner on second after a single and sac bunt, but he was eventually thrown out at third by S. Little on a fly out to rightfield.

Ithaca put up the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth on an inside-the-park homerun by W. Little to centerfield with junior Josh Savacool on base to extend the Bombers' lead to 4-1.

Senior John Prendergast kept the Soaring Eagle hitters off balance all contest, tossing a complete game in just 73 pitches. Prendergast struck out six batters, including all three in the seventh, and gave up just an unearned run on five hits.

Out of the eight hits for Ithaca's offense, five went for extra bases. Boresta (two doubles), W. Little (homerun and double) and Thompson (double) all had two hits in the opener.

GAME TWO: Ithaca 7, Elmira 1

Elmira went up, 1-0, in the top of the first on an RBI double to the left-center gap. A one-out walk came around to score on the base hit.

Ithaca knotted the game up at 1-1 on a sac fly from Thompson with W. Little on third. W. Little hit a double and moved up as Savacool was thrown out at home on the play.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Adam Gallagher gave the Bombers a 3-1 edge with a two-run homerun over the left-center scoreboard with senior John Stanley on base. It is Gallagher's first career round-tripper.

Ithaca's lead grew to 4-1 in the third on a solo homer from Thompson, his team-leading fifth of the season.

Two more runs crossed for the Bombers in the fourth to give Ithaca a 6-1 edge on an infield single from Gallagher and a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Zach Cole. Boresta and Stanley scored on the plays.

Another ball left the yard in the bottom of the seventh for Ithaca as W. Little stroked his second homerun of the day to make the score 7-1.

Senior Benji Parkes tossed Ithaca's second complete game of the day for his seventh win of the season. Parkes scattered eight hits and struck out eight Soaring Eagles in the outing.

Gallagher went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while W. Little was 2-for-4. Stanley also collected two hits in four at bats.

The Bombers wrap up their regular season tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with another Empire 8 contest at St. John Fisher College. Ithaca will then head back to Fisher for the Empire 8 Tournament on May 12-14.
