SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team lifted their record to 3-0 on the season with a 67-61 road victory at Skidmore College on Tuesday evening in Williamson Sports Center. Ithaca led for all but 16 seconds in the game
In the first quarter, Ithaca scored the opening basket on a layup from senior
Ali Ricchiuti over a minute into the contest. After Skidmore tied the game up on its ensuing possession, junior
Jordan Beers went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to give the Bombers the lead for the rest of the quarter, as the Bombers built a 17-11 advantage.
Midway through the period, Beers and junior
Erin Woop connected on consecutive 3-pointers to put Ithaca up, 9-5. The lead extended to 13-5 shortly after on layups from Woop and senior
Shayna Gaskins, but Skidmore brought things back to a 13-11 spread with 2:42 remaining. Ithaca tallied the last four points on baskets from senior
Erin Ferguson and sophomore
Meghan Pickell.
Ithaca held onto its lead up to a 20-20 tie with 5:39 left in the second quarter, and then the Thoroughbreds took their first lead of the game 31 seconds later. It was short lived, as Ricchiuti knotted things on a layup and put Ithaca back in front with the and-one. The Bombers would then outscore Skidmore, 10-2, for the rest of the stanza to take a 33-24 cushion into halftime.
Beers finished the first half with 10 points, while Ricchiuti and Woop added five points each.
The Bombers sustained their largest lead of the game in the third quarter with two minutes left, 50-35. Ricchiuti scored Ithaca's first four points of the period, and then freshman
Cassidy O'Malley five straight to put Ithaca up by 11 points at 42-31 with 3:18 remaining in the frame. Ithaca went into the fourth quarter with a 12-point advantage at 55-43.
In the fourth quarter, Ithaca held onto its double-digit lead of a majority of the period. Skidmore trimmed the difference down to six points, but there was only 37 seconds left in the contest and the Bombers would go on to win, 67-61.
Beers led Ithaca's offense with 16 points, while Ricchiuti just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Ferguson contributed eight rebounds, six points and four blocks.
O'Malley and sophomore
Annie Giannone each added seven points, while Jackson chipped in six points.
Ithaca shot 24-for-65 (36.9-percent) from the field with 44 rebounds. Skidmore went 19-for-55 overall and was 19-for-30 at the line.
The Bombers are back in action next Tuesday, November 29 for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Cortland.
