ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team never trailed in their 84-73 victory over William Smith on Saturday inside Ben Light Gymnasium to improve to 2-0 on the season. Today's contest was the final game of the 2016 Cortaca Classic.
The Bombers jumped out to a fast start in the matchup, as junior
Jordan Beers connected on back-to-back 3-pointers over the opening minute to stake Ithaca to an early 6-0 lead. William Smith chipped away at its deficit and got back to within one point, 10-9, with 4:20 left in the quarter, but Ithaca closed out the period on an 11-6 run to account for its 21-15 lead after the first.
Sophomore
Allie Tunick hit consecutive threes to give the Bombers its largest lead of the period, 21-11, with 2:05 to play.
As the second quarter got underway, Ithaca scored seven quick points on a three from Tunick and buckets from sophomore
Meghan Pickell and senior
Erin Ferguson to extend its cushion to 28-15 just 1:22 in.
The Herons responded with a 10-2 run in less than two minutes to get to within five points at 30-25 with 6:41 to play. Ithaca put together a run of its own shortly after, as the Bombers scored 10 of the next 11 points to back up by 14 points, 40-26. Six of those points came from behind the arc by Beers in a 42-second span.
Ricchiuti would score six straight points for the Bombers late in the quarter to extend their lead to 17 points, 46-29, with less than a minute remaining. William Smith tallied the final basket to account for the 46-31 halftime score.
William Smith came out of intermission and whittled Ithaca's lead down to nine, 52-43, midway through the third quarter, but the Bombers answered with five quick points from senior
Shayna Gaskins and sophomore
Sara Jackson, which sustained a double-digit spread for the rest of the game.
Ricchiuti led all scorers with 20 points, her second straight 20-point effort, on 8-of-18 shooting with six rebounds and three assists. Beers tallied 16 points, highlighted by four 3-pointers, while Ferguson notched 14 points and seven boards.
Tunick scored 13 points (4-for-6) in 17 minutes off the bench. Pickell added seven points, while Jackson chipped in five. Gaskins grabbed seven rebounds to go along with three steals.
Ithaca went 33-for-80 from the field (41.3%) and 10-for-30 from 3-point range. The Bombers also scored 26 points off turnovers.
The Bombers travel to Skidmore next Tuesday, November 22 for a 6 p.m. non-conference matchup.
