BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Brockport Invitational and completed the first week of the 2015 season with a 4-1 record. Ithaca defeated Penn State Behrend in the opening match of the day, 3-1, but was swept by Brockport in the final contest of the weekend.
Match One: Ithaca 3, Penn State Behrend 1 – (25-23, 25-11, 17-25, 25-17)In the opener, sophomore
Joelle Goldstein led all players with 13 kills on a .324 hitting percentage to go along with three digs and two service aces. Classmate
Kayla Gromen dished out 32 assists – a match high – and accumulated eight kills on 19 attempts, six digs and two block assists.
Freshhmen
Amanda Cerruti and
Hailey Adler each added seven kills in the win. Cerruti paced Ithaca defensively at the net with five total blocks, while Adler posted a match-high 20 digs. Senior
Dylan Gawinski-Stern played a solid defense contest with 17 digs and handed out four assists with two aces.
Junior
Breanne Tuohy chipped in five kills, while freshman
Katie Evans tallied four kills and four total blocks. Sophomore
Marlee Wierda rounded out the match with four digs and two kills.
The Bombers played exceptionally well in sets two and four, hitting .348 and .333. Ithaca committed just three errors each in those two sets, compared to nine and eight in sets one and three. Behrend only hit .073 for the match and committed a total of 41 errors.
Match Two: Brockport 3, Ithaca 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22)Ithaca suffered its first loss of the season in the final match of the weekend in straight sets. The Bombers managed 30 kills in the setback, while Brockport put down 44 and hit .122 better than Ithaca (.258 to .136).
Goldstein once again paced Ithaca in kills with nine, and just missed a double-double with 10 digs. Gromen notched 24 more assists to go along with seven digs and two kills.
Evans swung at the best rate for the Bombers (.238) on seven kills in 21 tries. She also added five digs. Adler scored on four kills, while Cerruti and freshman
Kyle Dandrea each had three kills. Adler also tallied six digs, Evans notched five digs and Dandrea amassed six digs.
Gawinski-Stern posted 12 more digs to her total in the defeat.
The Bombers are back in action on September 11-12 for the Bomber Invitational in Ben Light Gymnasium. Ithaca opens with Alfred for an Empire 8 match at 7:30 p.m. on the 11th and then takes on Wells and Widener on the 12th at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
