ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College men's soccer team opened its 2015 season with a 4-1 loss on Friday afternoon as the Bombers fell to Medaille College in the opening game of the Mayor's Cup Tournament at Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.
With the loss, Ithaca slides to 0-1-0 on the season while the Mavericks improve to 1-0-0.
Ithaca was unable to generate much offense in the first half of play and trailed by two goals late in the opening stanza after the Mavericks found the back of the net in the 14th and 29th minutes.
Both teams would turn up the intensity on the defensive end of the field as neither squad would surrender a goal for nearly 40 minutes of play until Medaille struck again in the 70th minute on a crossing pass in the box to take a 3-0 lead.
Two minutes later,
Brandon Thompson cut into the lead in the 72nd on a feed from
Jose Contreras, but the Mavericks responded in the 76th minute, scoring their fourth goal of the afternoon to earn the 4-1 win.
Zach Jacobsen took the loss in goal for the Bombers and moved to 0-1-0 overall. The junior goalie made four stops in all.
Offensively, the Bombers outshot the Mavericks, 15-11, and had five corner kick opportunities in all.
Ithaca will return to the pitch at 4 p.m. on Saturday when it takes on nationally-ranked Oneonta in the Mayor's Cup Tournament at Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.
