ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore
Marc Chasin tied a career-high with 38 points on Thursday as the Ithaca College men's basketball team scored a season-high 96 points en route to a 96-85 win over Union College in a non-conference battle in Ben Light Gymnasium.
With the win, Ithaca moves to 6-2 overall while the Dutchmen fall to 1-5 on the season.
Chasin led all scorers after knocking down 15-of-26 shots including five from beyond the 3-point line. The Coral Gables, Fla. native also pulled down nine rebounds and added four assists in the win.Â
Sam Bevan added 19 points for Ithaca and a team-high five helpers while
Peter Ezema, the reigning Empire 8 and ECAC Rookie of the Week, notched his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.Â
Joey Flanagan also reached double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Ithaca found itself in an 11-point hole in the early goings after Union jumped out to a 22-9 lead with 12:04 to play in the first, but a pair of free throws from senior Bevan sparked a 10-0 run for the Bombers to bring the home team to within three points, 22-19.
After exchanging baskets over the next four minutes, Ithaca would take its first lead of the contest at the 4:19 mark of the opening stanza after back-to-back 3-pointers from Bevan and
Matt Flood made it 36-34 in Ithaca's favor.
The Dutchmen would tie the contest twice in the half's final three minutes with lay-ups but Bevan would stake the Bombers to a three-point lead after a backdoor pass to Chasin found its mark to give Ithaca a 44-41 heading into the locker room.
Coming out of intermission, Union would once again tie the score, 51-51, after a fast break dunk, but it was all Ithaca from there as the Bombers would build their lead to 10 when Chasin drained one of his five 3-pointers to put Ithaca up 76-66 with 7:32 still showing in the game.Â
The Dutchmen would hang around however, cutting the lead to five points, but that was as close as they would come as the Bombers closed out the game on an 11-5 run to pick up their sixth win of the season, 96-85.
As a team, head coach
Jim Mullins' squad shot the ball well, nailing 36-of-71 attempts (.507) while connecting on 13 3-pointers. Defensively, Ithaca forced 16 turnovers and held Union to just 22 percent from distance.
Ithaca will remain idle until 2 p.m. on January 3 when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology in its Empire 8 opener in Ben Light Gymnasium.Â
