Box Score ALFRED, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team earned the top overall seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship and the right to host the four-team tournament after outplaying Alfred, 1-0, on Saturday in an Empire 8 contest at Yunevich Stadium.Â
With the win, the Bombers, who earned their first No. 1 seed since the 2008 season, ended the regular season with a conference mark of 6-1-0 and an overall record of 7-7-2. The Saxons moved to 10-5-2 with the loss and 3-3-1 against Empire 8 competition.
After nearly 31 minutes of scoreless play, the Bombers scored the game's lone goal late in the first half as
Andrew Coburn recorded his first goal of the season after taking the feed from
Sam Boylan and beating Alfred's keeper to lift Ithaca to the 1-0 win.
The Bombers, who were outshot in the contest 23-12, were able to hold the Saxons scoreless to record their second consecutive shutout and fifth in their last six games.Â
Zach Jacobsen came up with seven big saves including one in the final minutes to preserve the win. Jacobsen has tallied six wins and five shutouts in his first season as the team's starting keeper.
Ithaca will return to action on Friday when it takes on the fourth seed in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Championship at Carp Wood Field.
