FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team continued its winning streak with victories over SUNY Canton and Hilbert College at the Fredonia Invitational on Saturday. Ithaca opened with a five-set triumph over Canton and then swept Hilbert to improve to 18-1 on the season with its 13th and 14th consecutive wins.
At the conclusion of the tournament, sophomore
Kayla Gromen was named most valuable player, while classmate
Joelle Goldstein and freshman
Kyle Dandrea landed on the all-tournament team.
Gromen tallied 99 assists over 11 sets played this weekend, to go along with 19 digs, nine kills, three blocks and two aces.
Goldstein notched 22 kills in two matches with 21 digs, while Dandrea amassed eight kills and three digs in six sets.
MATCH ONE: Ithaca 3, Canton 2 (26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 15-10)In Saturday's opener, the Bombers came away with a five-set victory over the Kangaroos. Ithaca won the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-23, but dropped sets three and four, 25-19 and 26-24, to set up a winner-take-all fifth set. In that set, Ithaca hit .250, compared to .188 for Canton, to secure the win.
Goldstein led the offensive attack with 15 kills to go along with nine digs. Gromen handed out 49 assists in the match with 10 digs and four kills.
Sophomore
Caroline Gerulskis notched 12 kills with five digs and five block assists, while freshman
Hailey Adler put down 11 kills on a .310 hitting percentage with 17 digs, four blocks, two assists and an ace.
Senior
Dylan Gawinski-Stern compiled a team-high 23 digs, and freshman
Katie Evans added eight kills, five blocks and three digs. Freshman
Amanda Cerruti rounded out the top performers with five kills and five blocks.
MATCH TWO: Ithaca 3, Hilbert 0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-15)Ithaca completed the perfect weekend with a sweep of Hilbert. The Bombers outhit the Hawks, .288 to .025. Ithaca also benefitted from 12 service aces.
Dandrea paced the Bombers with eight kills and two digs. Adler was close behind with six kills, three digs and two aces.
Sophomore
Izabella Mocarski tallied nine digs and a team-best four aces. Gromen dished out 25 more assists with six digs and three kills.
Gawinski-Stern and junior
Breanne Tuohy each had four kills. Gawinski-Stern also chipped in five digs and two assists, while Tuohy notched three aces and a pair of digs. Cerruti added four more kills against Hilbert.
The Bombers return home on Oct. 7 for a 6 p.m. match against Cortland in Ben Light Gymnasium. The match will also be the next #ShedTheRed event on campus.
