ITHACA, N.Y. – Brandon Thompson scored the game-winning goal in the final minutes of the first overtime period as the Ithaca College men's soccer team earned an important conference win on Saturday with a 1-0 decision over Elmira College at Carp Wood Field.Â
The Bombers, who celebrated senior day prior to the contest, clinched a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship and move to 5-7-2 overall and 5-1-0 in the Empire 8 standings while the Soaring Eagles fall to 6-5-4 overall and 2-1-3 against conference competition.
Thompson's goal came in the 98th minute as the senior forward came away with a loose ball before Elmira's keeper could corral it and kicked it across the goal line to give Ithaca the victory. Thompson, who was honored before the game along with fellow seniors
Blair Carney,
Joseph Dobbins,
Jordan Filipowich and
Cody Kiss, has now notched a team-high seven goals on the season.
Earlier in the game, the Bombers would take a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Kiss found the back of the net after catching Elmira's goalie out of position. Carney was credited with an assist on the play.
The lead wouldn't last for long, however, as Elmira was able to net the equalizer just three minutes later after scoring on a corner kick opportunity to make it 1-1.
Zach Jacobsen nailed down his fifth win of the season after turning aside nine shots in all.
The Bombers, who will close out their regular season with two road games, will take on Rochester Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in a non-conference bout.
