ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's volleyball team notched a five-set comeback win over SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday evening in Dewar Arena. Ithaca is now 23-3 on the season and 5-1 in matches that go five sets.
The Bombers won the first set, 26-24, but would drop the next two, 25-20 and 25-22, to face a 2-1 deficit in the match. A fourth set win of 25-23 forced the decisive set, where Ithaca came away with a 15-12 victory.
In the first set, Ithaca led by a 23-19 margin, but Oneonta fought back to knot the game up at 23-23 before the Bombers scored four of the final five points. The Bombers never led in the second set, and held an 8-6 advantage in the third frame until the Red Dragons stormed back for a 16-14 and never looked back.
The fourth set was back-and-fourth the entire way, with Ithaca's largest lead coming at 20-15. Oneonta answered to tie the set up at 23-23, but the Bombers responded with the final two points. The deciding set was also close throughout, as Ithaca held a slim 8-7 lead when the teams switched sides. Ithaca would close out the match on a 7-5 run that ended on a kill by freshman
Kyle Dandrea.
Sophomore
Joelle Goldstein led the Ithaca offense with 14 kills on a .279 hitting percentage with 16 digs and four block assists. Classmate
Kayla Gromen handed out 44 assists to go along with 17 digs and five kills (.364).
Sophomore
Caroline Gerulskis put down nine kills with a pair of digs, while freshman
Hailey Adler notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Freshman
Katie Evans added seven kills and three digs, while Dandrea tallied six kills with three digs. Another freshman,
Amanda Cerruti, contributed five kills and five total blocks.
Senior
Dylan Gawinski-Stern registered 17 digs from the back row, while sophomore
Marlee Wierda added five digs.
The Bombers notch 73 digs in the match to go along with 56 kills and seven blocks (eight assists, three solo).
Ithaca is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 24 for an Empire 8 Conference tri-match with Hartwick and St. John Fisher. The Bombers open with Hartwick at 11 a.m. and wrap up Empire 8 play against Fisher at 4 p.m. Ithaca's match against Fisher also marks Senior Day.
